ALBION - For 75 minutes, the Albion defense proved to be a brick wall. But once the Calvin women's soccer team found an opening, the wall tumbled down as Knights gained a 3-0 victory to remain on top of the MIAA standings.
Sophomore Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) scored two goals inside the final 16 minutes of play including the eventual game-winner with 15:43 left on the clock.
Capel's initial goal came Calvin a 1-0 advantage and the lead swelled to 2-0 when sophomore Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) slammed home a penalty kick just over two minutes later to give the Knights breathing room. Capel then scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year with 4:40 to complete the scoring.
Now ranked 16th by D3soccer.com and 17th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Calvin improves to 13-1-2 overall and to 10-1-1 in the MIAA. It marks the fourth consecutive year that Calvin has hit the double-digit plateau in conference victories.
The Knights held a commanding 26-2 shots at goal advantage including 9-0 in the first half. One of Albion's two shots came shortly before Ten Harmsel's penalty kick goal with Calvin senior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) making the key save.
Hearn collected her 28th collegiate shutout in the victory.
Calvin will now prepare for a key Saturday matchup at Adrian scheduled to begin at noon at Adrian's Docking Stadium.
