Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Athlete of Week Honors

Four Calvin fall sports athletes have received MIAA Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports. In men's cross country, freshman Zac Nowicki is the MIAA Men's Runner of the Week while Calvin senior Nicole Michmerhuizen is the MIAA women's Runner of the Week. In men's soccer, Calvin junior Travis Vegter is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week while in women's soccer, Calvin sophomore Paige Capel is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week.

Below are capsules of their accomplishments.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin's Zac Nowicki and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Sept. 29.
ZAC NOWICKI

Nowicki, a freshman from Comstock Park (Grandville Calvin Christian HS), finished first in Saturday's MIAA Jamboree at Adrian, posting a time of 26:06 over the 8-kilometer course and finishing six seconds ahead of his nearest challenger as he led Calvin to a first-place finish for the meet. He is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time in his career.
 NICOLE MICHMERHUIZEN
Michmerhuizen, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), took first place in Saturday's MIAA Jamboree at Adrian by 37 seconds, covering the 6-kilometer course in 22:13 in leading the Knights to a first-place finish. She is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time this season and third time in her career.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Paige Capel its Offensive Player of the Week in women's soccer for games played through Sept. 29. It has also named Calvin forward Travis Vegter its Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer for games played through Sept. 29. Vegter shares the award this week with Adrian's Nick Minshall.
PAIGE CAPEL

Capel, a sophomore from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS), scored four goals and added an assist for the week in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories. She scored twice and set up a third tally in a 5-1 win over Adrian, then added two more goals as Calvin defeated Kalamazoo 4-0. Capel is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

TRAVIS VEGTER

Vegter, a junior from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS), scored three goals in leading the Knights to a pair of victories that moved them into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. He scored two goals in a 3-0 win over Trine, then scored the game's first goal in a 2-1 victory over Adrian. Vegter is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career.
