CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 28, 2013

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

ADRIAN - The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams raced to first place victories at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the Lenawee Christian High School cross country course.

In the women's race, seventh-ranked Calvin took five of the top six spots for a first place score of 19 points, 21 points ahead of Hope. On the men's side, 13th-ranked Calvin recorded 38 points, 17 points ahead of second place Hope.

The Knights had the top finisher in both races as senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won the women's race in 22:13 while freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) won the men's race in 26:06.

Michmerhuizen grabbed the lead in the final 100 meters and led a pack of Calvin runners across the finish line. Sheri McCormack was second but the Knights took the next four spots led by senior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) in third place. She was followed by Calvin junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) in fourth, junior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in fifth and senior Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) in sixth.

"It was a good start to our conference season," said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer of the women's race. "We had a few bumps during the race but we also had some people really step up and do some nice things. We need to fill a few holes here and there but I am confident that we will do that as the year progresses."

On the men's side, Nowicki moved past Albion's Paul Lewis with 100 meters to go and sprinted home for the victory. He was one of five Calvin runners to place in the top 12.

Calvin's second finisher was junior Jacob Kuyvenhoven (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in fifth. He was followed by freshman Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) in ninth, senior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 11th and junior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) in 12th.

"Our men did what they had to do today," said Diemer. "For Zac Nowicki to run the race that he did and have the moxie to pull ahead at the end shows the type of talent and character he has. That was impressive. We have a young team sprinkled in with a few veterans and a few of our veterans have been banged up. As the upperclassmen get healthier, our depth will improve and that should help us in future races."

Calvin is back in action next Friday when it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Looking to continue to make their way up the MIAA standings, the Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Kalamazoo to face the Hornets on Saturday. Calvin, holding the fourth overall spot with 10 points heading into the match, trailed Adrian by two points while leading fifth-place Kalamazoo by just one point.

Earning a 4-0 victory over Kalamazoo, Calvin moved into a tie for third place with Hope at 13 points apiece, while a victory by Adrian over Alma tied the Bulldogs and Scots atop the MIAA at 15 points each.

Senior Heidi Scholten put Calvin up early with a goal in the eighth minute.

In the 14th minute, Scholten found herself in another scoring opportunity when she went one-on-one with the Kalamazoo goalkeeper. But, a timely run off the line gave the keeper a great angle, and a shot by Scholten deflected off the keeper and out of bounds.

Despite a majority of possession and a 9-1 shots advantage, the Knights took just the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, Calvin added a quick insurance goal as Scholten assisted on a goal by sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel in the 48th minute, TenHarmsel's seventh goal on the season.

The Knights added to their lead in the 56th minute. Continuing her impressive game, Scholten collected a bouncing ball in the Kalamazoo box and found sophomore Paige Capel in the middle of the field who slotted the pass into the lower left hand corner of the net from 10 yards out to give Calvin a 3-0 advantage.

In the 74th minute, Calvin took a 4-0 lead as TenHarmsel sent a long ball into the middle of the box for Capel. Capel, beating the keeper to the ball, volleyed the pass into the back corner of the net for her second goal of the game and fifth of the year.

The Knights held on to the 4-0 edge for the remainder of the match as senior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn earned the clean sheet, making three saves. Calvin held a 20-9 shots advantage by the end of the match.

"We became a little more aggressive and purposeful in the second half, so we were much more efficient," said head coach Mark Recker. "I challenged the players at halftime to really step up their commitments to what we've been practicing, and they found the focus and energy to execute and we got three quality goals (in the second half) to put the game away. It's always good to have a road win."

Calvin moves to 7-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAA while Kalamazoo drops to 4-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.

The Knights now look forward to Wednesday when they will host the Comets of Olivet for a 4 p.m. contest.

The Calvin men's soccer team traveled to Adrian on Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the MIAA. Both teams entered the contest at 2-0 in conference play. The Knights were 1-0-3 at Adrian the past four years, but with a pair of first half goals and strong defense, Calvin claimed its second win in five years at Performance Stadium.

The Knights were first to find the back of the net. Junior Travis Vegter continued his torrid scoring pace in the first half, taking a pass from sophomore Taylor Pruis and burying it in the back of the net, giving Calvin the 1-0 lead. The goal was the 12th of the year for Vegter.

Calvin increased its lead in the 39th minute as junior Sean Broekhuizen scored his first goal of the season to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage, which they would take into halftime.

Calvin displayed a stout defense in the first half, allowing only one shot by the Bulldogs. The Knights offense, on the other hand, totaled 13 shots.

In the second half, Adrian found its offense, and in the 53rd minute, cut Calvin's lead to 2-1 as senior Nick Minshall beat Knights junior keeper Andrew Claucherty for the goal.

In the 73rd minute, Adrian had another great opportunity on net. Breaking behind the defense, a punt from the Bulldogs keeper bounced over the heads of the Calvin defense and in front of Minshall. Running toward the top of the box, Minshall just put a foot on the ball before Claucherty came off his line. Fortunately for the Knights, Minshall's shot bounced wide of net and the score remained 2-1.
Despite chances on either end over the final 20 minutes, Calvin held the one goal advantage for the remainder of the contest, claiming the 2-1 victory.

"Adrian's a tough place to play: it was hot, a tough style of play, they use home field really well," said head coach Ryan Souders. "We didn't play fantastic in the second half, but we did what we needed to get the win, and what really matters is the three points and I'm proud of the guys for getting those."

Calvin is now 4-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play while Adrian drops 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the MIAA.

The Knights will next be in action on Tuesday when they travel to Olivet to face the Comets, with the match starting at 4 p.m.
