Calvin Men's and Women's Soccer Teams Picked to Repeat as MIAA Champions

WOMEN'S SOCCER

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Women's soccer coaches in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association have chosen defending champion Calvin as the preseason favorite for the 2013 season.The Knights, who won both the MIAA championship and conference tournament last season, received seven out of a possible nine first-place votes in the preseason poll. Alma, which was picked to finish second, and Saint Mary's, which was picked fourth, each received one first-place vote. Hope was picked third in the poll, followed by Saint Mary's, Adrian, Kalamazoo, Olivet, Trine and Albion.

Poll Results (first-place votes in parenthesis): 1. Calvin (7) 9 pts. 2. Alma (1) 18. 3. Hope 25. 4. Saint Mary's (1) 28. 5. Adrian 31. 6. Kalamazoo 43. 7. Olivet 52. 8. Trine 58. 9. Albion 60.

Calvin opens its scheduled on August 31 when it hosts Montreat College (NC) at 10 a.m. Calvin's MIAA opener is scheduled for September 9 when it travels to Alma for a 4 p.m. match.

MEN'S SOCCER

Defending champion Calvin has been chosen the preseason favorite to win the 2013 MIAA men's soccer championship.The Knights, who won the both the MIAA championship and the conference tournament last fall, edged out Hope in the preseason poll by one point, with both teams receiving three first-place votes. Kalamazoo, which was picked to finish third, received two first-place votes in the poll of the league's coaches.

Olivet, which advanced to the championship game of the MIAA tournament last fall, was picked fourth, followed by Adrian, Alma, Trine and Albion. Calvin will open its season on August 30 at 2011 national champion Ohio Wesleyan University. Calvin's opening conference game is slated for September 17 at home vs rival Hope at 4:30 p.m.

Calvin has won at least a share of the last six MIAA regular season titles.
