Volleyball Team Picked to Repeat as MIAA Champions

VOLLEYBALL

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - Defending champion Calvin has been selected the preseason favorite to win the 2013 MIAA volleyball championship.

The Knights, who won the MIAA championship last fall before going on to finish second in the NCAA Division III tournament, received seven out of a possible nine first-place votes in the preseason poll of the league's coaches. Hope, who was picked to finish second, received the other two first-place votes.

Alma was selected to finish third, followed by Adrian, Trine, Saint Mary's, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Albion.

Poll Results (first-place votes in parenthesis): 1. Calvin (7) 9 pts. 2. Hope (2) 14. 3. Alma 25. 4. Adrian 34. 5. Trine 35. 6. Saint Mary's 41. 7. Kalamazoo 49. 8. Olivet 54. 9. Albion 63.

Earlier this week, Calvin was ranked second in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll. Calvin will be bidding for its fourth consecutive MIAA regular season title this fall - something the program has never achieved. Adrian and Alma are the only two schools in MIAA history to win at least a share of four consecutive MIAA regular season crowns.

MIAA teams will begin non-conference action Friday, Aug. 30, with the first conference matches set for Tuesday, Sept. 3. Calvin's opening competition will be on August 30 and 31 when its competes at the University of Puget Sound Premier Invitational.
