CALVIN ATHLETES AND TEAMS RECEIVE ACADEMIC AWARDS FROM MIAA
MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
The 2012-13 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and a record 151 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2012-13 academic year.
A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.
This year's Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, seven are from Calvin.
The seven Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Eric Doornbos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Matt DeBoer (Hudsonville, MI/Covenant Christian HS), Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI, /Fraser HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS).
MIAA TEAM GPA AWARD
The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2012-13 school year, a record 11 of Calvin's athletic teams achieved this distinction.
Seven of Calvin's women's teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while four of the men's teams also achieved the feat. Calvin's teams receiving the honor are as follows; women's cross country, women's volleyball, women's tennis, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's soccer, women's track and field, men's tennis, women's swimming and diving, men's golf and men's basketball.
Under the direction of Brian Diemer, the women's cross country team topped the list of Calvin teams, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.537. In addition, they are one of only two teams joining the Hope women's cross country team as the only teams to receive the award all 15 years it has been presented.
