Hope 7, Calvin 3
By Mitch Blankespoor
HOLLAND, Mich. - For the third straight game at Boeve Stadium, the Calvin
baseball team leaves with a loss. After falling to Hope both games in the MIAA
regular season finale last Sat., the two rivals met again on Wed. May 8. The
Knights dropped a 7-3 decision in the MIAA Tournament.
Junior Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian) took the hill for the
Knights. Schepers avoided major disaster in the first three innings, but Hope
was able to tag Schepers for three runs. Brady VanderWeele singled up the
middle to lead off the bottom of the first. After being bunted over, Chris
Blair delivered an RBI-single to right center field giving the Flying Dutchmen
a 1-0 lead after one.
Calvin tied up the game in the top of the third. Senior Jack Jorgenson
(Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) stopped the string of six straight batters
retired by Hope senior pitcher Cory Schmidt with a single to center field.
Freshman first baseman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian) followed up
with a single to right field advancing Jorgenson to third. Senior left fielder
Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA/Berean Christian) grounded into a 4-6-3 double
play, but got Jorgenson home.
After stranding two runners in the second, Schepers gave up two runs in the
third, but the fourth inning proved to be his undoing. The junior was pulled
after giving up three runs on four hits, and left two runners on base for
junior Cory Laster (Ludington/Ludington). Laster gave up two runs on a single
to right field on the first pitch he threw, but settled down afterward. Laster
ended up finishing the last 4.1 innings for Calvin pitching two-hit baseball.
Calvin cut Hope’s lead to 7-3 in the sixth inning on a two run single from
junior catcher Kyle Spoelma (Grand Rapids/South Christian). The Knights could
not muster anymore runs in the final three innings of the nine-inning contest,
and fell to the Flying Dutchmen.
Sophomore center fielder Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian) finished
the game 3-4 with three singles. He was, however, caught stealing for just the
third time all season. Six other Knights finished with one hit.
Calvin returns to MIAA Tournament action tomorrow when the Knights travel to
Boeve Stadium to face the Thunder of Trine University. The Thunder were
defeated by Adrian 5-4 in the other MIAA Tournament game Wed.
