Calvin baseball hosted the Scots of Alma for a doubleheader on Monday
afternoon. After dropping a game against the Scots last Friday in weather which
featured snow flurries and near freezing temperatures, Monday's outcomes
contrasted as much with last Friday as the weather, with the Knights taking
game one 4-3 and game two 13-5 under sunny skies.
In game one, Alma jumped out to an early lead as they scored one run in the
top of the first. After the Scots added another run in the top of the third to
extend their lead to 2-0, Calvin responded with three runs in the bottom of the
third, including a two-run RBI single hit between third base and shortstop by
senior Ben Cok to take a 3-2 lead.
Alma scored a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman Michael Kamp then led off the the bottom of the seventh with a
single. Tyler Tos hit a bunt down the first base line to move Kamp over to
second while reaching first safely. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Grant Van
Putten then moved the runners over to second and third, and an intentional walk
to freshman Travis Kraai set up Cok with a bases loaded situation and just one
out in the inning.
The senior came through, hitting the ball through the same gap as he had in
the third to give the Knights a walk-off win.
Senior Jack Jorgenson earned the win out of the bullpen with a scoreless
inning of relief.
Sophomore Nate Schepers started the game, pitching six innings, giving up one
earned run while striking out five.
Cok was 2-for-4 with three RBI in game one while Kamp was 1-for-2 with two
runs scored.
In game two, Alma again plated a run in the top of the first to take the early
lead.
In the bottom of the first, Calvin took a run back on some great base-running
by Van Putten. Reaching base on a bloop infield single, Van Putten stole
second, third, and home to not only tie the game at 1-1 but move into first on
the Calvin career stolen-base list with 41 for his career.
Calvin then scored five runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the
third to extend its lead to 8-1.
In the top of the fifth, Alma got three runs back to cut the Knights advantage
to 8-4. Calvin responded with three of its own in the bottom of the inning and
added two more in the sixth to take a 13-4 lead.
The Scots scored one run in the top of the seventh to cut Calvin's lead to
13-5 before the Knights recorded the final outs to earn the victory.
In game two, Kraai was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while freshman
Tyler Lambers was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Junior Kyle Spoelma was 3-for-4 with
an RBI and two runs scored while Van Putten went 2-for-4 with four runs scored.
Junior Cory Laster earned the win, pitching four and a third innings, giving up
one earned run and striking out three.
“Two big games for us to stay in the conference race,” said head coach John
Sparks. “(In game one), we found a way to get some guys on late in the game and
of course Ben (Cok) came through with the game-winning hit. We've gone through
a dry streak with our bats which have been good overall all year, and it was
nice to see us break out (in game two) going into our next series against
Albion.”
With the pair of wins, Calvin moves to 12-17 overall and 11-8 in the MIAA,
while Alma drops to 10-16 and 6-11 in conference play.
The Knights will host the Britons of Albion on Thursday for a doubleheader
scheduled to start at 2 p.m. before traveling to Albion on Saturday, with
another twinbill scheduled for 1 p.m.

KALAMAZOO - Calvin got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep at
Kalamazoo Monday afternoon, winning 8-0 and 3-1. The Knights are now 14-12
overall and 5-7 in the MIAA.
In game one, Calvin ended the contest by way of the mercy rule as the Knights
scored three runs in the top of the sixth to build an 8-0 advantage and then
blanked the Hornets in the bottom half to complete the win. The Knights took a
1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Trista Brownlee
(Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) that plated sophomore Christie VanderMeer
(Grandville/Grandville HS) after VanderMeer had singled and stole second.
In the fourth, sophomore Jannelle Agren (Cadillac/Muskegon Community College)
walked and then scored on an RBI triple by sophomore Merin Cok (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Calvin then erupted for five hits and three
runs in the fifth and tacked on three more in the sixth with junior Lina Avila
(Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) lacing a two-run RBI triple and freshman
Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also connecting on an RBI
single.
Avila went all six innings for the Knights to improve to 7-5 on the year while
lowering her season earned run average to 2.78.
Calvin had 14 hits in the game one win led by VanderMeer and Rozeveld who were
both 3-for-4 at the plate. Brownlee, freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS)
and Avila all had two hits apiece.
In game two, Calvin took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Agren
doubled and later scored on a single by Gildea. Avila later followed with a
run-scoring to right-center.
In the fifth, VanderMeer singled, stole second and then third and scored on a
squeeze bunt by Brownlee. Kalamazoo added a single run in the top of the sixth
but did no further damage.
Junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Community College) went all seven
innings for Calvin to pick up the win and improve to 4-5 on the year. Calvin
had seven hits including three of the extra-base variety. In addition to the
double by Agren, Roseveld had a double and sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a triple.
