CALVIN KNIGHT WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP FOR April 21, 2013

Broekhuizen Has Successful Pro Soccer Debut for Dayton Dutch Lions FC

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College men's soccer alumn Joe Broekhuizen had a successful professional soccer debut for the Dayton Dutch Lions Football Club Saturday night. In the season opener Saturday against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Broekhuizen was a late substitute and promptly delivered an assist on the game-winning goal off a corner kick. The winning goal came in stoppage time and lifted Dayton to a 2-1 victory.

Even more notable about the win is that Dayton played a man down for nearly 60 minutes as one of its players was issued a red card in the 28th minute of play.

This fall, he was a first team All-MIAA selection after scoring 13 goals and collecting six assists for a total of 32 points.

Dayton has a pair of games scheduled for this weekend as it takes on VSI Tampa Bay Friday and Irlando City on Saturday. The Dayton Dutch Lions FC website can be found online at: http://www.daytondutchlionsfc.com/site/
