The Calvin College women's softball team hosted Trinity Christian College
Friday afternoon for a doubleheader.

In game one, Trinity got off to a quick start and scored a run in the bottom
of the first inning. A walk sent the leadoff hitter to first base. After
advancing to second, Tori Grzincic belted a double into the left field gap to
bring the runner home and give the Trolls the 1-0.

Trinity extended its lead in the third inning as Michelle Interrante hit a
two-run home run over the center field fence to bring the score to 3-0.

Calvin responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the third to cut the
Trinity lead to 3-1. Another run in the bottom of the fourth for the Knights
brought the score to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Calvin's offense came alive. A double from
sophomore Catherine Hilbrands scored Merin Cok from second base to tie the game
at 3-3.

With two outs, Calvin then received a big hit from freshman Ashley Reimersma
which scored Hilbrands to take a 4-3 lead. Three more runs from the Knights
brought the score to 7-3.
Calvin sophomore Trista Brownlee then kept Trinity hitless in the top of the
seventh to close out the Knights victory.

In game one, sophomore Christie VanderMeer was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Brownlee
was 3-for-4 at the plate while also pitching four and one-third innings in
relief to earn the win while allowing just one hit. Brianna Brugioni took the
loss for Trinity, giving up five earned runs while striking out seven.
In game two, Trinity had a near carbon-copy top of the first as the first game
when Grzincic brought in a run with an RBI single.

The Knights responded in the bottom of the first when freshman Lydia Gildea
hit VanderMeer in from third base to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the third, Calvin took the lead as Gildea added her second
RBI of the game. Gildea put a single into right field, and on some aggressive
base running, VanderMeer came in from second to give the Knights a 2-1
advantage.

The Trolls responded in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the inning, a
two-run triple from Anna Phillips gave Trinity the 3-2 lead.

Trinity then expanded its lead in the top of the fifth. Tori Stevenson began
the scoring the fifth when she hit a double which brought in two runs. Tegan
O'Connor then hit a looping single into left field which brought in another
pair of runs, and the Trolls expanded their lead to 7-2.

After another scoreless half of the inning for the Knights, the Trolls picked
up where they had left off and continued their strong hitting. The inning was
highlighted by a triple from Philips which brought home two runs. Philips's two
RBI were just two of six totaled by Trinity in the top of the sixth to give the
Trolls a 13-2 lead.

Trinity pitcher Jayme Love then sealed the victory holding Calvin hitless in
the bottom of the sixth as the Trolls took a 13-2 mercy-rule victory.

In the second game, Lydia Gildea was 2-for-3 with two RBI while VanderMeer was
1-for-2 with two runs scored.

For Trinity, Philips totaled four RBI and two runs on 3-for-4 hitting.
O'Connor added two RBI and two runs on 3-for-4 hitting while Bailan Reynolds
and Grzincic were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

“We started off a little bit slow in the first game and then came back and
rallied and that was great,” said head coach Sharon DeKleine. “In the second
game they really had some big hits. We made some errors and we just couldn't
put the stop on it. It's part of the game and we're going to move forward.

We'll come out Monday for practice, work hard and get ready for Alma.”

The Knights play Alma next week Tuesday, the first game in the conference
schedule. Calvin moves to 8-4 with the doubleheader split while Trinity is now
4-12. Calvin will host the Scots, with the first game scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
