ANGOLA, IN - Calvin split a doubleheader at Trine Wednesday afternoon, dropping the opener 9-4 before coming back to win the nightcap 4-3. Wednesday's game marked the MIAA opener for both teams.
In game one, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning but Trine exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth and added two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth to put the game away.
Calvin committed three errors in the pivotal fourth inning and finished with five errors for the game overall.
Junior righthander Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the hard-luck loss to fall to 1-2 on the year. Calvin had seven hits including doubles from freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and freshman Michael Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS).
In game two, junior lefthander Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) picked up his ninth career victory in a Calvin uniform, going six innings while striking out four and scattering six hits and allowing just two runs. Trailing 2-1, Calvin rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Garrett Harder (Fenwich/West Michigan Lutheran HS) came up with a clutch RBI single that plated senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) to tie the game at two. Harder later scored on a Trine error and freshman Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drove in an important run on a fielder's choice ball hit up the middle.
In the seventh, Trine came back with a solo home run and later placed runners on second and third with two outs but Bouma was able to get the final out in a relief role to claim his second save of the season.
The victory also snapped a seven-game Calvin losing skid.
Cok and Kraai both collected two hits apiece for Calvin as did freshman Tyler Lambers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) who got the start at first base in both games for the Knights.
Calvin is back in action on Friday when it travels to Olivet for a 2 p.m. twinbill.
