Softball Splits/Women's Lacrosse Defeated/Men's Tennis Wins/Baseball Swept
SOFTBALL
Bowdoin 6, Calvin 2
Calvin 9, Framingham State 1
CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split a pair of softball games on Tuesday, falling to
Bowdoin 6-2 and defeating Framingham State 9-1 in five innings.
In the loss to Bowdoin, Calvin (4-2) fell behind 4-0 after four innings but
came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Bowdoin then scored a pair
of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) belted her second home
run of the spring but Calvin mustered only four hits in the loss. Junior
Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss to fall
to 1-2 on the year. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutherans
HS) split time in the circle for the Knights in relief of Callow.
In the win over Framingham State, Calvin scored once in the third, five times
in the fourth and three times in the fifth. Avila hit another home run in the
win as did junior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS). Sophomore Christie
VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) had two hits and two runs batted in as
did freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS). Junior Ashley
Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon-Reeths Puffer HS) and freshman Lydia Gildea
(Gobles/Gobles HS) also had two hits apiece.
Avila got the victory in the pitching circle, striking out two and allowing
just three hits. Avila is now 3-0 on the year.
Calvin will face Manchester and Benedictine in single games on Wednesday.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Randolph-Macon 18, Calvin 5
ASHLAND, VA - Calvin suffered an 18-5 loss to Randolph-Macon College Tuesday
afternoon. The Knights are now 1-5 on the year while Randolph-Macon improves to
5-1.
Calvin trailed 12-2 at halftime and could not mount a comeback in the second
half. Senior Katie Pranger (Denver, CO/Denver Christian HS) led the Calvin
attack with three goals - boosting her season total to 13.
Junior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and
sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also scored goals for
the Knights.
Pranger and senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern Christian HS)
scooped up four ground balls apiece. Spoelstra also had six saves in goal.
Randolph-Macon outshot Calvin 29-13 in the game.
Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it travels to St. Vincent (Pa.) for
a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Lawrence 3

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men’s tennis team improved to .500 on its spring
break trip by defeated Lawrence University (WI) Tues., March 19. Calvin won
two of the three doubles flights, and won four of six singles flights to win
the match.
Jason Dunn and Max Zlevor defeated Calvin seniors Phil Reinken (Morton,
IL/Morton HS) and Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) 8-5 for the Vikings’
lone doubles point at first doubles. Senior Brian Demaagd (Grandville/Calvin
Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) dispatched
Cooper Smith and Jeremy Andererck 8-2 at second doubles. Former Holland
Christian standouts senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior
John Strikwerda (Holland/.Holland Christian) pulled out a 9-8(5) victory over
Craig Sherwood and Brian DeCorte at third doubles.
Calvin won the top two singles flights. DeMaagd defeated Smith 6-1, 6-1 at
first singles while Phillips outlasted Dunn 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at second singles.
Peterson and Brower won at fourth and fifith singles without surrendering more
than two games in a set.
Calvin’s spring break trip continues Thurs., March 21, when the Knights take
on Knox College (IL).
BASEBALL
Calvin dipped to 1-8 with a pair of defeats in Arizona Tuesday. Calvin dropped
a 12-8 decision to Williams and then dropped a 24-13 contest to Macalester. No
further details for the games were available.
