Carissa Verkaik Named WDIII News Player of the Year;
Vande Streek Named NABC Division III District Co-Coach of the Year - Snikkers

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
BEAVERTON, ORre. — Calvin College senior center Carissa Verkaik has been named
the 2013 Women’s DIII News Player of the Year. It’s the second straight season
she has earned the honor.
Verkaik led the Knights to a 23-4 overall record and a bid in the NCAA
tournament. She averaged 20 points and 9.2 rebounds and shot 58 percent from
the floor. Her season highs included a 37-point performance against Adrian and
17 rebounds in a win over Thomas More. She was named Player of the Year in the
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for the fourth straight season.
“As the reigning Player of the Year, Carissa was already one of the top
players in Division III basketball and she went out an improved in every
statistical category,” said WDIIIN editor Gary Rubin. “She will go down as one
of the best in recent memory.”
Verkaik headlines the 2013 WDIIIN All-American team, where she was joined on
the first team by Sam Barber of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Sarah Collins of
Babson, Jill Woerner from Catholic University and Simpson’s Kate Nielsen.
WDIIIN has named a Player of the Year every season since 1994.
 
This past weekend, Verkaik was named the D3hoops.com Player of the Year and
recipient of the prestigious Jostens Trophy.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Calvin College men's basketball coach has landed another post-season honor as
has Calvin senior Tom Snikkers. Vande Streek has been named the Division III
Great Lakes Co-District Coach of the Year by the National Association of
Basketball Coaches. Meanwhile, Snikkers has been named to the Great Lakes
Region All-District second team.
 
Vande Streek shares the NABC Co-District Coach of the Year honors with Mike
DeWitt of Ohio Wesleyan. This year, Vande Streek led Calvin to its third MIAA
regular season title in five years and its first MIAA Tournament crown since
2007. He also led Calvin to its first NCAA III Tournament berth since 2007 as
the Knights advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin
concluded the year with an overall record of 26-4. Vande Streek recently
concluded his 17th season as Calvin men's basketball coach. He is 334-140 at
Calvin (.702) and 426-220 (.658) in 21 years a collegiate head coach. Last week
Vande Streek was named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Co-Coach of the
Year.
 
A senior forward, Snikkers hails from Jenison and is a graduate of Hudsonville
Unity Christian High School. This year Snikkers averaged 13.4 points, 6.0
rebounds and 2.7 assists a game while connecting on 45.7 percent of his field
goal attempts. He was a first team All-MIAA selection for the third straight
year and was named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region team.
 
Snikkers finished his career with 1,464 points - good for eighth place on the
Calvin all-time scoring list in men's basketball.
 
SOFTBALL
 
CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split its Monday games in Florida, dropping an 8-5
decision in 10 innings to Trinity of Connecticut before coming back to defeat
Gallaudet University 15-1 in five innings. The Knights are now 3-1 on the young
season.
 
In the loss to Trinity, Calvin fell behind 3-0 but rallied with three runs in
the bottom of the sixth inning. Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and
also again in the ninth. In the 10th, Trinity broke loose for three unanswered
runs to put the game away.
 
Sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-3 with
two runs batted in while sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville
HS) was 3-for-4.
 
Junior pitcher Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took
the loss, tossing 9.2 innings before giving way to sophomore pitcher Trista
Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Swan Valley HS) tossed the final third.
 
In the win over Gallaudet, Calvin exploded for 12 runs in the first two
innings to take control. Cok continued her blistering day at the plate, going
3-for-3 with a double, home run and three runs batted in. Freshman Megan
Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also belted a home run while junior
pitcher Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) picked up the win,
striking out three while running her season record to 2-0.
 
Calvin has games scheduled against Bowdoin and Framingham State scheduled for
Tuesday.
 
BASEBALL
 
TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision to Williams
College on Monday. The Knights are now 1-6 on the year. Further details of the
game were not available.
 
MEN'S TENNIS
Oglethorpe 6, Calvin 3

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men’s tennis team began its spring break trip with a
6-3 loss to Oglethorpe University (GA) 6-3 on Mon. afternoon.

All three doubles flights were close, but saw the Stormy Petrels taking two of
the doubles flights from the Knights. Calvin seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley,
OH/Bexley) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated Ethan Motz and Nick
Roby 8-6 at the first singles flight. Bryan Bailey and CJ Antonio defeated the
Calvin second doubles team of senior Brian Demaagd (Grandville/Calvin
Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) by a score
of 8-6. Former high school teammates senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland
Christian) and sophomore John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) fell in a
tiebreak 9-8(7-1) at the third doubles flight.

Calvin needed to win four of the six singles flights to win the match, but
could muster just two wins. DeMaagd defeated Motz 7-5, 6-3 at the first
singles flight. Peterson picked up the other Calvin victory at the four
singles flight 6-2, 0-6 (10-4) over Kirk Zhao. Reinken was able to take his
match to a third set, but after winning the first 6-1, Reinken was unable to
win another game, and fell 6-0, 6-0 in the final two sets.

Calvin continues its spring break trip tomorrow, Tues., March 19, when it
takes on Lawrence.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Puget Sound 6, Calvin 3
Otterbein 5, Calvin 4

ORLANDO, FL – The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped its first two contests of
the spring break trip, falling 6-3 to Puget Sound (OR) and 5-4 to Otterbein
(OH).

In the match against the Loggers of Puget Sound, the Knights fell behind
early, losing all three doubles flights. Maddie Thiese and Allison Embernate
defeated sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and junior
Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 9-7 at first doubles. Logan
Thompson and Marissa Friedman defeated seniors Jordan Ipema
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian) 8-2 at second doubles. Jenna Gersen and Josie Dow defeated
sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian) 8-6 in the third doubles flight.

Calvin split the six singles flights, winning first, third and fifth singles.
Visser defeated Thiese 6-3, 6-2 at first singles. Roode pulled out a three set
victory, defeating Thompson 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 at third singles. Reitsma defeated
Dow 6-1, 7-5 at fifth singles.

Doezema came close to defeating Embernate at sixth singles, but fell in three
sets by scores of 5-7. 7-5, 10-3.

In the matchup against Otterbein, Calvin fell behind 2-1 after the doubles.
Julie Stroyne and Sammi Kruger defeated Visser and Zoerhof 8-3 at first
doubles. Emma Krummel and Adrien Leatherwood defeated the Calvin duo of Ipema
and Doezema 8-6. The Knights’ lone win in doubles came from Roode and Reitsma
defeating Kelsey Leachko and Emily Harper 8-2.

Calvin split the six singles flights. Roode defeated Alana Cheplowitz 6-1,
6-4 at third singles. Zoerhof defeated Krummel 7-6(0), 6-2 at fourth singles.
Doezema defeated Leadko 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.
Calvin continues its spring break trip Mar. 20, when it faces Hamilton.
 
WOMEN'S GOLF
Nebraska Wesleyan 378, Calvin 382
 
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Calvin women's golf team was in dual match action against
Nebraska Wesleyan Monday morning at the Royal St. Cloud Links Golf Course.
Nebraska Wesleyan edged Calvin by four strokes, finishing at 378 while Calvin
was at 382.
 
Calvin freshman Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) was the match
medalist with a score of 87 while junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron
Northern HS) had a 94 and freshman Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt Hs) a 96.
 
Senior Rachel Whitaker (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern HS) had 105 and
freshman Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) a 106.
 
Freshman Shara Reynolds (Adrian/Adrian HS) served as an alternate and posted a
score of 110.
 
Calvin will next compete at the Adrian Invitational on April 6.
