Snikkers and Verkaik Receive MIAA Co-Player of the Week Honors in
Men's/Women's Basketball
MEN'S BASKETBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – For the second straight week, the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Tom Snikkers as its Co-Player of
the Week in men’s basketball for games played through January 12. Snikkers, a
senior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), shares the Player of the
Week award with Hope’s Colton Overway.
Snikkers earned Player of the Week honors as he averaged 20.5 points and 7.0
rebounds in two victories that kept the Knights in a first-place tie in the
MIAA race. He had 22 points and six rebounds in a 79-53 win over Kalamazoo,
then added 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists as Calvin defeated Alma,
86-63.
Snikkers, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this
season and third time in his career, shot 56 percent from the field (19 of 34)
for the week. Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts rival Hope at
8 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
The game will be televised live throughout West Michigan on WGVU-TV 35/52. As
of Monday afternoon, over 650 tickets still remain for Wednesday's Calvin-Hope

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin center Carissa Verkaik and Olivet center Stefanie Lang its Players of
the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 15.
Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became just the second
player in MIAA women’s basketball history to go over 1,000 career points in
league play, averaging 19 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots as the
Knights moved into sole possession of first place with a pair of wins. She had
21 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 97-53 win over Kalamazoo, then
added 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in a 64-59 victory over Hope.
Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this
season and ninth time in her career, shot 58 percent from the field (14 of 24)
and 82 percent at the line (9 of 11) for the week.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Adrian for a 6 p.m.
contest.
