Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors
VOLLEYBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has
named Calvin outside hitter Lizzie Kamp its Position Player of the Week and
Calvin setter Megan Rietema its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for
matches played through October 20.
Kamp, a senior from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 31 kills for
a .394 hitting percentage and 21 digs as the Knights remained unbeaten in MIAA
play with sweeps of two of its closest rivals. She had 13 kills and nine digs
in a win over Alma, then followed with 18 kills and 12 digs in a sweep of Hope
that solidified Calvin’s hold on first place in the MIAA. Kamp is being honored
as Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and sixth time in her
career.
Rietema, a junior from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), dished out 73 assists
(12.2 per set) and added 22 digs and nine kills as Calvin swept Alma and Hope
to stay unbeaten in the MIAA. She had 36 assists and served up three aces
against Alma, then came back with 37 assists, 16 digs and six kills against
Hope. Rietema is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this
season and eighth time in her career.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday night when it hosts Trine at 6:30 p.m.
at Van Noord Arena.
MEN'S SOCCER
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has
named Calvin forward Travis Vegter its Offensive Player of the Week in men’s
soccer for games played through Oct. 21.
Vegter, a sophomore from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS), scored two goals
and assisted on two others in leading the Knights to a pair of wins that moved
them into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. He scored the game’s
first goal in a 2-1 victory over Hope, then scored another goal and added two
assists in a 4-1 win over Albion.
Vegter, who is tied for the MIAA scoring lead with 19 points (seven goals,
five assists in league play) is being honored as Player of the Week for the
first time in his career.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. at
Zuidema Field.
The Knights currently hold a three-point lead over Olivet for first place in
the MIAA standings.
