CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 17, 2012
Women's Soccer Shuts Out Olivet 3-0 To Remain Atop MIAA Standings;
Cross Country Teams Make Moves Up in National Rankings
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Olivet 0
By Mark DeHaan
With an important conference game against Saint Mary's looming on Saturday,
the Calvin women's soccer team had to first focus on its matchup with Olivet
Wednesday afternoon. In their meeting earlier this year, the Knights defeated
the Comets 1-0 on a second half goal. This game would also be determined in the
second half as the Knights scored three goals in the final fifteen minutes of
regulation to earn a 3-0 victory.
Calvin, despite not scoring in the first half, had no shortage of
opportunities, the first coming just a few minutes into the game as senior Liz
Cancel had a shot on goal from the middle of the box that went right at the
keeper.
A few minutes later, junior Kelly Koets put a shot on net that appeared to be
heading for the lower left corner before an outstretched diving save from the
Olivet keeper kept the game scoreless.
With fifteen minutes remaining in the opening half, senior Francesca Smith put
a shot from the top of the box off the crossbar, but not in.
Although the Knights held a 12-1 shots advantage at half, the scored remained
0-0 heading into the break.
With just under fifteen minutes remaining in the contest, it was freshman
Paige Capel that would break the scoreless tie, just as she had in the first
meeting between the two squads. Freshman Taylor TenHarmsel sent a fantastic
through ball to Capel who broke past the Olivet defense then dribbled past a
charging Comets keeper to put it into the net for a 1-0 Calvin advantage.
Just over a minute later, in the 78th minute, Capel set up TenHarmsel at the
top of the box for a great shot. TenHarmsel, extending her goal-scoring streak
to four goals in three games, put the shot into the top left corner to give the
Knights an insurance goal.
In the 83rd minute, Capel set up junior Heidi Scholten at the top of the box
just as she had TenHarmsel. And, on what seemed to be a replay of the goal just
five minutes early, Scholten placed the ball into the top left corner of the
net to finish the Calvin scoring at 3-0.
At game's end, Calvin held a 32-6 shots advantage, including 11-1 on goal.
Junior keeper Ashton Hearn made one save in the game, earning the win for the
Knights.
“Today I challenged the team at halftime that we needed more movement, and
more movement as a unit,” said head coach Mark Recker. “As we started to break
through in the second half, you could see that we started to combine quicker,
and that's when you know we are playing better. This game was another building
exercise of respecting your opponent, no matter who they are, and learning to
deliver with efficiency and excellence, and I think we did that today.”
With the win, Calvin stays atop the MIAA standings at 9-2 in conference while
moving to 10-3 overall. The loss drops Olivet to 2-10 in MIAA play and 2-14
overall. The Knights now look forward to Saturday when they will host the
Belles of Saint Mary's at 2:30.
