Calvin 4, Albion 1
(By Mitch Blankespoor)

ALBION – The Calvin men’s soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over Albion College
Tuesday afternoon. The Knights improve to 11-3 on the season, 9-1 in the MIAA.
Calvin is currently in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings,
three points ahead of Olivet. Olivet was idle on Tuesday but is scheduled to
host Hope on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. match.

Calvin opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Senior forward Joe Broekhuizen
(Grand Rapids/South Christian) took a cross from sophomore Travis Vegter and
beat Albion keeper Avilekh Bhattachan. Despite outshooting the Britons 7-1 in
the first half, the Knights could not get another goal.

Calvin opened up the second half on the offensive. The Knights scored two
goals in the first ten minutes. Freshmen Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian) scored his sixth of the season off of a pass from Joe
Broekhuizen. A minute later, Vegter scored his sixth of the season on a shot
from the top of the 18-yard box. Pruis got on the scoreboard for the second
time in the 77th minute.

Kyle Alsheskie scored the lone goal for Albion in the 87th minute.

Calvin outshot Albion 12-4 in the contest as well as holding a 5-3 advantage
in corner kicks.

“It wasn’t an easy game for us,” Calvin head coach Ryan Souders said. “They
played a lot of guys behind the ball, making it tough for us to score. We were
only able to put one away in the first half, but our guys stayed resilient, and
we were able to open up their (Albion’s) defense in the second half.”

Calvin returns to action when it hosts the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College on
Saturday, October 20. The game is scheduled for noon at Calvin’s Zuidema
Field.
