Women's Soccer Defeats Saint Mary's in Overtime;
Men's Golf Fourth at MIAA Jamboree - Remains in Overall MIAA Lead

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin women’s soccer team moved to 5-2-0 overall and to
4-1-0 in the MIAA with a 1-0 sudden-death overtime victory at Saint Mary’s
College Thursday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Danielle Carter rifled in a shot three minutes into overtime
for the game-winning score. Junior Heidi Scholten was credited with an assist
on the play. Calvin outshot Saint Mary’s 21-5. Junior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn
was credited with the shutout for Calvin.
“This was a quality win against a quality opponent on the road,” said Calvin
women’s soccer coach Mark Recker. “I think wins on the road this year will be
hard to come by in our league so we’re happy to come out of here with three
points.”
With the win, Calvin moves into second place in the MIAA standings, one point
behind league-leading Alma.
Calvin will host Adrian on Saturday at noon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin men's golf remains in sole possession of first place
in the overall season MIAA standings but the race has tightened up. Calvin
entered Thursday's MIAA Jamboree at Trine University's Zollner Golf Club with a
22-stroke lead but host Trine narrowed the gap with a first place total of 288
strokes. Calvin was fourth with 297 strokes while Hope took second (291) and
Adrian third (294).
Calvin leads the overall MIAA standings by 13 strokes with three league
tournaments left to play. Alma will host an MIAA Jamboree on Saturday at the
Pine River Country Club. Calvin will host an MIAA Jamboree at the Watermark
Country Club next Monday and Albion will host an MIAA Jamboree on October 9 at
the Medalist Golf Club.
Calvin's top golfer on Thursday was junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS) with a 72 that was good for a seventh place tie
individually. Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a
74 while senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a 75.
Junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) and sophomore James
VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) both had rounds of 76.
Nolan Eli of Trine was the medalist on Thursday with a round of 69.
Saturday's MIAA Jamboree at Alma will begin at noon and is scheduled to be
held at the Pine River Country Club.
