WOMEN'S SOCCER
(Calvin 1, Olivet 0)
By Mitch Blankespoor
OLIVET - The Calvin women’s soccer team traveled to Olivet Tuesday afternoon
to face the Comets. The Knights avoided the upset, escaping with a 1-0 win.
Calvin (4-2, 3-1 MIAA) dominated possession and shots in the first half, but
could not break the tie. The Knights outshot Olivet (0-9, 0-5 MIAA) 9-5 in the
first half and earned more corner kicks by a 5-2 margin.
The Knights opened up the second half on fire. After several corner kicks and
shots wide in the first ten minutes, junior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin
Christian) narrowly missed a goal, hitting the woodwork. The ball then found
the feet of freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel on the nearside. She crossed the ball
into Olivet’s box. It squirted through a couple of Comet defenders, right to
sophomore Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). Capel simply tapped the
ball in, netting her third goal of the season.
“Taylor crossed the ball in from the corner,” Capel said. “It somehow got
through the defenders, and all I had to do was touch it in.”
Capel nearly scored a minute later, ripping a shot that was saved by Olivet
goalkeeper Deanna Zolnoski.
Olivet could muster a single shot in the second half, while Calvin had 13.
This meant the Knights outshot the Comets 22-6 in the entire contest. Calvin
took 13 corner kicks, while Olivet took two.
This win puts the Knights tied for second place in the MIAA with Hope and
Saint Mary’s.
“We weren’t as sharp as we normally are mentally or physically,” Calvin head
coach Mark Recker said. “It’s the first road win for our young team this
season. We need to prepare for a tough game Thursday.”
Calvin will travel to Saint Mary’s to take on the Belles Thursday. The game
is scheduled for 4 p.m.
