CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 14, 2012

123 Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll/Six Calvin Teams
Receive MIAA Team GPA Award

MIAA ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

The 2011-12 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)
Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson
and 123 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.

The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5
grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic
year.

A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be
eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to
recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics
and in the classroom.

This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the
distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, eight are from
Calvin.

The eight Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor
Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Jakeniah Christiansen (New
Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Luke DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS), Sarah Fennema (Brookfield, WI/Wilwaukee Lutheran
HS), Rebecca Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS), Laura Sybesma
(Cerritos, CA/Valley Christian HS), Kristin VanKampen (Elmhurst,
IL/Timothy Christian HS), and Tyler Vegter (Hudsonville, MI/Unity
Christian HS).

MIAA TEAM GPA AWARD

The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges
present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes
conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3
cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently
completed 2011-12 school year, six of Calvin’s athletic teams achieved
this distinction.

Five of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while
the men’s cross country team also achieved the feat. Calvin’s teams
receiving the honor are as follows; women’s cross country team, women’s
track and field team, women’s basketball team, women’s volleyball team,
women’s tennis team, and men’s cross country team.

Under the direction of Brian Diemer, the women’s cross country team
topped the list of Calvin teams, earning a cumulative grade point
average of 3.667. In addition, they are one of only three teams joining
the Hope women’s cross country team and the Albion women’s soccer team
as the only teams to receive the award all 14 years it has been
presented.

Bret Otte and John Ross had both of their women’s teams receive the
award for the eighth straight year. Otte’s women’s track and field team
posted an average of 3.561. Ross’s women’s basketball squad posted a
grade point average of 3.519. This was the highest average of any
women’s basketball team in the MIAA.

Dr. Amber Warners saw her women’s volleyball team honored for tenth
time with a grade point average of 3.475. In addition, the women’s
tennis team under the direction of Dr. Jerry Bergsma picked up the award
for the ninth time, recording a team grade point average of 3.465.

The lone men’s team awarded was Calvin’s cross country team. They did so by
earning a grade point average of 3.446.
