MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The NCAA has passed a new qualification system for divers seeking to qualify
for the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships next March and Calvin will
be a part of that new process.
Beginning this year, men's and women's divers seeking to qualify for the NCAA
III Championships will compete at one of four regional qualifying sites March 1
and 2. Calvin has been selected as one of the four host sites with competition
slated to be held at the Venema Aquatic Center.
"We are extremely pleased to be selected to host a diving regional," said
Calvin head men's and women's swimming coach Dan Gelderloos. "The new format
has been in the works for many years and it is exciting to see it not only
happen, but also take place on Calvin's campus."
In prior years, divers needed to hit a qualifying score and then submit a video
of their qualifying dives to a national committee. The committee would then
reveiw the videos and make the final selections for the official diving field
for the NCAA III Championships.
With the new regional format instituted, divers will no longer need a committee
to review their work but will instead earn their way to the national meet at
the regional competition.
In order to advance to the regional meet, divers will still need to hit a
qualifying score on either the one or three-meter boards during the regular
season and must then submit an intent-to-compete form for the regional meet by
late February. At the regional meet the winner of each diving competition (one
and three-meter) will gain an automatic qualification to the NCAA III
Championships, scheduled to be held March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas.
Additional qualifying spots for the men's and women's one and three-meter
boards will be determined by the amount of divers competing at each regional.
"There are four regional sites - the Northeast-South Regional, the
Northeast-North Regional, the Midwest-South-West Regional and the Central
Regional," said Calvin men's and women's diving coach Aaron Paskvan who has
served as the diving representative on the NCAA III Rules and Championships
Committee the last four years. "Calvin is a part of the Central Regional so we
will be hosting divers from the states of Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois,
Indiana and a few from the state of Minnesota. There will be additional
qualifying spots for divers at the regional meet but it will depend on how many
divers are competing. If there are more divers at one regional, that regional
would have more qualifying spots. We won't know how many overall (qualifying)
spots there are for each regional until divers declare to compete for regional
competition in late February."
Paskvan is also excited about the new format and the chance to host. "Calvin
has a high-quality facility for competition so that will be a big bonus for any
diver competing," said Paskvan. "I am also excited about the new format. I
think it will be a strong format for qualifying that will force divers to peak
at the end of the year, much like many other sports. In order to qualify for
nationals, a diver will need to continue to dive well in March, not just in
December."
Under the direction of Paskvan, Calvin has posted 13 All-America performances
in diving - nine on the women's side and four on the men's side. Paskvan was
named the Division III National Women's Diving Coach of the Year in both 2007
and 2009.
MEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin men’s soccer team is ranked 13th in the National Soccer Coaches
Association Division III Top 25 poll. A year ago, Calvin reached the NCAA III
