Calvin Lands Eight On All-MIAA Men's Track and Field Team & Eight on All-MIAA Women's Track and Field Team
 
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
Eight members of the Calvin men's track and field team have been named to the All-MIAA team.
 
Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors Nick Kramer, Justin Kremers and Dan Kerr, juniors Matt VanderRoest and Aaron Meckes and sophomores Evert Geerlings, Matt Christians and Sam Kerk.
 
NICK KRAMER (DYER, IN/ILLIANA CHRISTIAN HS) - Kramer is receiving All-MIAA track and field honors for the third time in his career. At the MIAA Championships last week, he took first place in the 5,000 meters. At the MIAA Jamboree in mid-April, Kramer took first place in both the . During the outdoor season, he was a two-time MIAA Runner of the Week.
 
JUSTIN KREMERS (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) - Kremers is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in his career. Kremers sparkled in the javelin for the Knights this spring, taking first place in the event at both the MIAA Jamboree and MIAA Championships.
 
DAN KERR - (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) - Kerr is receiving All-MIAA track and field honors for the second straight year. At the MIAA Championships last week, he took home a league title in the 10,000 meter run. At the MIAA Jamboree, he placed second in the 5,000 meters.
 
MATT VANDERROEST - (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) - Vander Roest is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in track and field. At the MIAA Championships last week, he took home a league title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He also took first place in the steeplechase at the MIAA Jamboree in April.
 
AARON MECKES - (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) - Meckes is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in track and field. He was a standout in both the discus and shot put this spring, taking first place in both events at the MIAA Jamboree and the MIAA Championships. A three-time MIAA Field Event Athlete of the Week this spring, Meckes is the third individual from his family to earn All-MIAA honors as his older brothers Nate and Josh Meckes were both All-MIAA track and field athletes at Calvin.
 
EVERT GEERLINGS - (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) - Geerlings is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in his track and field career. At the MIAA Jamboree and the MIAA Championships, Geerlings took first place in the pole vault.
 
MATT CHRISTIANS - (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) - Christians is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. At the MIAA Jamboree and the MIAA Championships, Geerlings took first place in the high jump.
 
SAM KERK - (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) - Kerk is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Kerk scored big points at both the MIAA Jamboree and the MIAA Championships. At the MIAA Jamboree, he placed third in the 1,500 meters and the 5,0000 meters. At the MIAA Champoinships, he took second in both the 1,500 and 5,0000 meters.
 

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
Eight members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors Kaitlin Diemer, Jodi Hoekstra and Lindsay VanderBrug, juniors Carissa Verkaik and Alyssa Penning and sophomores Nicole Michmerhuizen, Hilary Banning and Julie Busscher.
 
KAITLIN DIEMER (Caledonia/South Christian HS) - Diemer is making her third straight appearance on the All-MIAA track and field team. At the MIAA Jamboree, she placed third in the 1,500 meters and fifth in the 800 meters. At the MIAA Championships, she claimed the third individual league title of her career, winning the 800 meters while also placing third in the 1,500 meters. Diemer was the 2010 MIAA champion in the 800 meters and the 2011 league champion in the 1,500 meters.
 
JODI HOEKSTRA (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) - Hoekstra is receiving All-MIAA track and field honors for the third straight year. She was the MIAA champion this spring in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters, bringing her career MIAA title total to four. A year ago, Hoekstra was the MIAA champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and in 2010, she was the league champion in the 1,500 meters. At the MIAA Jamboree last month, she also took first place in both the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters.
 
LINDSAY VANDER BRUG (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) - Vander Brug is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. At the MIAA Championships, she was second in the 100 meter hurdles and sixth in the long jump. She also placed second in the 100 meter hurdles in at the MIAA Jamboree and seventh in the long jump. She is the second member of her family to be named an All-MIAA athlete as her father Kyle Vander Brug was a first team All-MIAA selection in men's basketball in 1985. Her first cousin is Carissa Verkaik who is also a member of the All-MIAA women's track and field team.
 
CARISSA VERKAIK (Holland/Holland Christian HS) - Verkaik is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA women's track and field team. At the MIAA Championships last week, she repeated as league champion in the high jump after winning the event at the MIAA Jamboree earlier in the spring. Verkaik is now a five-time All-MIAA athlete as she has also been named to the All-MIAA first team in women's basketball three times. She is joined on the All-MIAA track and field team by her first cousin Lindsday VanderBrug. Like VanderBrug, Verkaik is the second member of her family to be an All-MIAA athlete as her father Mike Verkaik was a member of the All-MIAA men's cross country team in 1982.
 
ALYSSA PENNING (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) - Penning is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in track and field. At the MIAA Championships last week, she claimed a league title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase while also placing fourth in the 5,000 meters. She also took first in the steeplechase at the MIAA Jamboree.
 
NICOLE MICHMERHUIZEN (Holland/Holland Christian HS) - Michmerhuizen is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time in her career. She took first place in the 10,000 meters at both the MIAA Championships and at the MIAA Jamboree. She also took second place in the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Championships.
 
HILARY BANNING (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) - Banning is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Banning was also a big point producer for Calvin in MIAA competition this spring. At the MIAA Championships, she was the league champion in the triple jump and took second in the 400 meter hurdles and in the long jump. At the MIAA Jamboree in April, she took first place in the triple jump and third in the long jump and 400 meter hurdles.
 
JULIE BUSSCHER (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) - Busscher is making her second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships last weekend, she took second in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes while also running a leg on Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team. She also placed second in the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the MIAA Jamboree in April.
