WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 7, Trine 2

By Mark DeHaan

With fourth place in the MIAA all wrapped up for the conference tournament,
the Knights looked to finish off their regular season with a win as they hosted
Trine Saturday afternoon at the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center. Calvin did
just that, defeating the visiting Thunder 7-2.

Calvin started off the afternoon in doubles play where it took an early 2-1
lead, earning wins in second and third doubles. In second doubles, sophomore
Lauren Schlagenhauf (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran HS) and junior Jordan
Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) won by a score of 8-3 while the third
doubles team of sophomore Emily Swets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) and
sophomore Nicole Sheppard (Harbor Springs/Harbor Springs HS) won 8-5.

In singles play, Calvin won three out of its first four matches to take the
win. Calvin won its first singles match at third singles as Ipema won 6-3, 6-1.
Schlagenhauf then won the second singles match 6-4, 7-5. Playing at fifth
singles, freshman Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) won 6-0, 6-2 to
grab the clinching fifth point. Rounding out the Calvin victories was freshman
Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) won 7-6, 6-3, while
sophomore Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won sixth singles 6-1,
6-2.

The 7-2 win moves the Knights MIAA record to 5-3 and their overall record to
7-12. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA Tournament where it will face
first-seeded Hope, who is 8-0 in conference, in the opening round next week
Thursday. The Knights lost their regular season match against Hope 8-1.

“We have a couple days to work on a few little things. We started out pretty
well in our first match with Hope, we just know we have to tighten things up a
little bit,” said Head Coach Jerry Bergsma. “There were a lot of questions
coming into this year, with a lot of new people in the lineup. I think we
responded very well to a tough start to the non-conference season and we built
some confidence in this group – hopefully we can take that into Thursday and
play our best.”
