CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 26, 2012
Men's Tennis Records Comeback Win Against Hope;
Suspended Softball Game at Alma Will Resume on Friday
MEN’S TENNIS
Calvin 5, Hope 4
By Mitch Blankespoor
The Calvin Knights men’s tennis team hosted rival Hope College at the
Strikwerda Tennis Courts. The match was played over a span of two days because
of weather. The first day of competition saw Hope winning two of the three
doubles flights en route to a 2-1 lead.
The first doubles match off the court was first doubles. Calvin juniors
Preston Phillips and Phil Reinkin held a slim 6-5 lead before seeing Hope
College junior Robert Cawood and sophomore Gabe Casher roar back to take the
pro set 8-6. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson gave the Knights their lone
doubles point defeating Cody Herbruck and Davis VanderVeen 8-4. Matthew Culver
and Parker Bussies gave Hope the lead by defeating Vashan Wright and Jarrod
Brower at the third doubles flight.
The singles matches then began, but could not finish. Rain forced the match
to be postponed until Thursday, April 26th.
Despite the weather delay, the Dutchmen did not miss a beat. The first
singles flight was the first match off the court. Robert Cawood made quick
work of Brian DeMaagd defeating him 6-0, 6-0. Preston Phillips avenged a
defeat at the Calvin Flighted Singles Invitational last weekend defeating
Parker Bussies 6-4, 6-2.
The next two matches off the court were Knight victories. Vashan Wright beat
Matthew Culver 6-3, 6-2 at six singles. Loukas Peterson defeated Cody Herbruck
in three sets by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The fifth singles flight proved to be the deciding match. Calvin junior Jarrod
Brower took the first set 6-4. Hope junior Davis VanderVeen took the second
set 6-3. Brower broke early in the third set taking a 3-2 lead. VanderVeen
broke back to tie the set at three games all. Brower broke VanderVeen’s serve
the very next game and held that break throughout to win the decisive third set
6-4 and give Calvin an insurmountable 5-3 lead as a team.
Hope took the third singles flight as Gabe Casher defeated Phil Reinken 6-2,
3-6, 6-4 to make the final score 5-4.
“Both teams got thrown a curveball with the weather,” Calvin head coach John
Ross said. “This is the first Calvin-Hope match I’ve been a part of that has
lasted two days. That being said, it was good to see our guys pull through in
several tight matches today. There’s a good chance that we will play them
again in the league tournament and I’m sure it will be just as hard fought.”
The win moves Calvin to 9-7 (4-1 MIAA) on the year. The Knights will return
to action this Saturday when they travel to Alma to take on the Alma Scots.
