Softball Goes Extra Innings at Alma Twice - Availa Breaks HR Mark
Baseball Swept at Albion;
Men's Tennis With Hope Suspended By Rain - Will Resume on Thursday;
Carissa Verkaik Named to BCAM Academic All-State Team
 
SOFTBALL
 
ALMA - The softball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in nine innings in
game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Scots Park.
 
In game one, Calvin sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, Ca/Valley Christian HS)
cranked her 11th home run of the season - allowing her to establish a new
Calvin single-season record for home runs, breaking the previous record of 10
set by Abby Konyndyk in 2005.
 
Alma scored single runs in the third and sixth to tie the game and then used a
pair of hits and a Calvin error in the ninth to claim the win. Avila took the
loss for the Knights.
 
In game two, Calvin and Alma battled to a 0-0 tie through eight innings before
darkness swept in. The game has been suspended. Whether the game will be
resumed has not yet been determined.
 
Both teams had chances to win late. Calvin had the bases loaded in the bottom
of the seventh but could not drive home the winning run. In the top of the
eighth, Alma loaded the bases with one out but Calvin starting pitcher Trista
Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was able to get out the jam with
a strikeout and a groundout.

BASEBALL

ALBION - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Albion on Wednesday,
falling by scores of 3-0 and 4-3.
 
In game one, each team recorded six hits but the Britons were able to score
once in the first and twice in the fourth to claim the win. Calvin loaded the
bases in the second inning with one out but could not score as the Knights hit
into a double-play. Calvin later had two runners aboard in the third and fourth
but again could not score.
 
Sophomore Cory Laster (Ludington HS) got the start for Calvin and took the
loss to fall to 1-4 on the year. Calvin had six players gain a hit including a
double by sophomore Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS).
 
In game two, Albion snapped a 2-2 tie with two runs in the bottom of the
fourth to gain the advantage.
 
Calvin (11-22 overall) grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of
the second inning as as freshman Austin Evenhouse (Highland, IN/Illiana
Christian HS) doubled home a run and freshman Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS)
singled home another. Albion (15-19) came back with single runs in the bottom
of the second and third however to tie the game and then scored twice in the
fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
 
Calvin came back with a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by
Evenhouse. In the top of the seventh, Calvin had the tying run on second base
but again, could not bring a crucial run home.
 
Freshman Tom Bouwkamp (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin
in relief of sophomore starter Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS).
Junior Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH/Southview HS) had a pair of hits for Calvin
including a double.
 
The two teams are back in action on Friday with a doubleheader at Calvin
scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS
 
The Calvin/Hope men’s tennis match was suspended on Wednesday because of rain.
The match was suspended after doubles play with Hope holding a 2-1 lead and
singles play just underway. The match will resume at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday
(April 26) at Calvin’s Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named to the Basketball Coaches
Association of Michigan (BCAM) College Academic All-State team. A native of
Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik is receiving
BCAM Academic All-State honors for the first time.
 
The 2011-12 MIAA Player of the Year, Verkaik averaged 19 points and 8.9
rebounds during her junior season. This past season, Verkaik was named to the
Capital One Division III Academic All-American 3rd team. She has also been a
two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Verkaik carries a 3.67 GPA and
is majoring in elementary education.
 
Other members of the BCAM Academic All-State Women’s College Team include
Maria Blazejewski of Lake Superior State, Patty Rewa of Albion, Melissa
Veltkamp of Cornerstone and Bethany Watterworth of Oakland.
