CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 4, 2012
Women's Tennis Edged by Albion 5-4 in Marathon Match;
Men's Track & Field Team Holds High Spot in National Rankings
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Albion 5, Calvin 4
(By Mitch Blankespoor)
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin College women’s tennis team dueled the
Britons from Albion College long past sunset. The match was tied at 4-4
with only one flight, fourth singles, still on the court. With
freshmen Samantha Reitsma holding a 3-2 advantage in the third set, the
match was moved to nearby athletic club MVP. It was Sarah Towler that
prevailed in the marathon match of over four hours winning the third set
tiebreak 10-8.
“You can’t ask much more of Sam,” Calvin head coach Jerry Bergsma
said. “She battled out there for over four hours and just came up a bit
short.”
Despite having a very inexperienced team, Calvin pushed last season’s
MIAA champions to the brink. Calvin took two of the three doubles
flights via the tiebreak. A pair of freshmen, Megan Visser and Reitsma
defeated Marissa Clouter and Irene Chen 9-8(3) in the first doubles
matchup. Lauren Schlagenhoef and Jordan Ipema defeated Marissa
Messenger and Leah Saurman 9-8(10) at third doubles. The Britons took
second doubles as Katie Blomberg and Sarah Towler took down Elise
Doezema and Bethany Zoerhof 8-3.
Calvin won their final two points at fifth and sixth singles.
Doezema avenged her doubles loss defeating Messenger 6-4, 6-4. Freshmen
Ali Roode beat Saurman handily 6-1, 6-3. Albion won the top three
singles flights as well as the decisive fourth singles.
“I was impressed with our toughness today. The first doubles match
was a good indicator of how we wanted to play today.” Bergsma commented.
The loss drops Calvin to 3-10 (1-2 MIAA) on the year. The Knights
return to action when they take on the Comets of Olivet College April 10
at Strikweda Tennis Center.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
For the second consecutive week, the Calvin men’s outdoor track and
field team is ranked sixth in the United States Track and Field Cross
Country Coaches Association’s Division III Top 25 poll. The Calvin men
are also ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Regional poll. The Calvin
women’s outdoor track and field team has dropped out of the Top 25 poll
after being ranked 24th a week ago. The Knights are ranked seventh in
the Great Lakes Regional poll. Both teams return to action on Saturday,
competing at the Adrian College All-American Invitational with a group
of distance runners also competing at an invitational hosted by the
University of Miami of Ohio.
