Women's Tennis Defeats Alma;
Men's Tennis Defeated by Davenport;
Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week in Track & Field

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Alma 3

Calvin evened its MIAA record to 1-1 with a 6-3 victory over visiting Alma
Monday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. Calvin (3-9 overall) took two
of the three doubles points to gain early control.

Claiming doubles victories for the Knights were junior Elise Doezema and
sophomore Bethany Zoerhof at No. 2 doubles and sophomore Lauren Schlagenhauf
and junior Jordan Opema at No. 3 doubles.

Freshman Megan Visser then claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, Ipema was a
4-6, 6-0, 6-4 winner at No. 3 singles, Doezema a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 5
singles and freshman Ali Roode a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles.

Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 4 p.m. at the
Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

MEN'S TENNIS
Davenport 7, Calvin 2

Calvin dipped to 3-5 overall with a 7-2 non-conference loss to Davenport
University Monday afternoon at the Canepa Tennis Center in East Grand Rapids.
The match was hard-fought but the Panthers won several close matches. The
Panthers swept the three doubles points including 8-6 wins at No. 1 and No. 2
doubles.

Junior Brian DeMaagd was a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles and sophomore
Loukas Peterson a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 4 singles but Davenport picked up
three-set victories at 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles to secure the win.

Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Trine in a conference match
at 4 p.m. at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has
announced its Athletes of the Week in track and field for meets through March
31. Olivet sprinter James Williams and Adrian sprinter Senneca Scott have been
named the Athletes of the Week in track events, while Adrian thrower Jacob Mehr
and Calvin high jumper Carissa Verkaik were recognized as Athletes of the Week
in field events.

Verkaik, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), took first place in the
high jump at the Grand Rapids Open meet with a jump of 5 feet, 5 inches.
Verkaik’s leap is tops in the MIAA this season and tied for fourth nationally
in Division III.
