BASEBALL

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin baseball team picked up a victory in the opener of an
MIAA doubleheader at Trine University Saturday afternoon, winning 9-7. Calvin
built an 8-1 lead only to see Trine roar back to within a run at 8-7 heading
into the seventh.

Calvin tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh however as junior
Tyler Tos ripped an RBI single to make it 9-7. Tos (Walnut Creek, CA) finished
the game 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Trine (6-6, 011 MIAA) put runners on second and
third with two outs but lefthander Cory Laster (Ludington) was able to
extinguish the threat on a fly-out to centerfield to pick up his second save of
the season. Senior Joe Lambers (Grosse Pointe) picked up the win for Calvin
(6-6, 1-1 MIAA) to run his season record to 3-1. Lambers struck out three and
walked two. Senior Scott Tipton (Stow, OH) also had three hits and two RBI’s on
the day. Calvin built an 8-1 lead by scoring two runs in the second, four in
the third and two in the fourth before Trine scored two in the fifth and four
in the sixth to make the game interesting.

In game two, Calvin suffered a hard-luck 1-0 defeat as the host Thunder scored
the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Grant
VanderWall (South Christian HS) took the loss despite a strong pitching
performance.
VanderWall (2-1) allowed just three hits in six innings of work but two of the
three hits came in the sixth inning and combined with an error, allowed the
Thunder to take a 1-0 lead. In the seventh, Calvin placed the tying run on
second base with two outs could not bring the runner home.
The two teams play again on Monday in a doubleheader at Calvin slated to start
at 2 p.m.

diving competition. The Calvin men placed 26th with 30 points.
