CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 22, 2012
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Mark Rushlow and Elizabeth Counsell both competed for Calvin
at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. Neither
individual was able to qualify for the evening finals however.
Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the (men's) 100 butterfly but was unable to
advance out of the morning prelims, finishing 19th with a time of 50.07.
Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) competed in the (women's) 200 freestyle prelims and
finished 42nd (1:57.74).
Action will continue on Friday with Rushlow scheduled to compete in the 100
backstroke where he is seeded 36th (52.06) and Counsell in the 100 breaststroke
where she is seeded third (1:03.62).
Sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) will also compete in the men's
one-meter diving preliminaries Saturday afternoon.
SOFTBALL
TUCSON, AZ - The Calvin softball team split its final four games of its spring
trip to Arizona. The Knights will head home with an overall record of 5-7. On
Wednesday, Calvin defeated Augsburg 8-2 and fell to Whitworth 11-2. On
Thursday, Calvin dropped a 9-4 decision to Carthage in eight innings before
coming back to defeat Carleton College 5-3.
In the win over Augsburg Wednesday, the Knights received a complete-game
pitching performance from sophomore Lina Avila. Avila helped her own cause with
a homerun while senior Marie Prins went 4-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Merin
Cok was also 2-for-2 at the plate.
In the loss to Whitworth, freshman Trista Brownlee took the loss. Calvin had
six hits in defeat. Avila had two hits as did freshman Christie VanderMeer.
Further details of Calvin's games on Thursday were not available.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Lawrence 0
ORLANDO, FL - Calvin closed out its spring trip with a 9-0 win over Lawrence
University.
The Knights are now 2-3 on the year. Calvin got off to a quick start, sweeping
all three doubles points with Brian DeMaagd and Preston Phillips winning at No.
1 doubles, Phillip Reinken and Loukas Peterson winning at No. 2 doubles and
Jarrod Brower and John Strikwerda winning at No. 3 doubles.
Picking up singles points for Calvin were DeMaagd (No. 1), Peterson (No. 2),
Reinken (No. 3), Phillips (No. 4), Brower (No. 5) and Vashan Wright (No. 6).
Calvin is back in action next Tuesday when it hosts Davenport at 4 p.m.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
William Smith 9, Calvin 0
ORLANDO, FL - The women’s tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to William Smith
on Thursday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-7 on the year.
Calvin closes out its spring trip in Orlando on Friday with a 9 a.m. match
against George Fox.
MEN'S GOLF
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - After one day of competition, Calvin is in first place at
the 36-hole Sunshine Invitational. Calvin is one of three teams competing in
the two-day invitational. Through 18 holes, Calvin is in first place with a
team score of 311 strokes while NESCAC regular season champion Williams is in
second place with 317 strokes and Trinity of Connecticut third with 323
strokes.
Playing in high wind conditions, Calvin received balanced play led by sophomore
Ross Ryzenga with a 75. Junior Ben Kuiper was close behind with a 76 while
freshman Jon Cook had a 79. Rounding out Calvin’s team finishers were sophomore
Mark Allen with an 81, freshman Michael Wierenga with an 82 and freshman James
Van Noord with an 88.
Competing as individuals for Calvin were senior Jake DeBoer with an 80, senior
Brian Haverdink with an 82, sophomore Jake Hoogstrate with an 82 and freshman
James Van Noord with an 88.
The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round on Friday and will be played at
the nearby Ryder Course.
