Men's Tennis Defeats Cornerstone 9-0;
Softball Coach Previews Upcoming Season

MEN’S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Cornerstone 0

On an absolutely beautiful March 13 afternoon, the Calvin men's tennis program
swept Cornerstone 9-0 at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts on Calvin's campus in its
first home match of the season.

The Knights opened up the match in doubles play. In first doubles, Brian
DeMaagd and Preston Phillips beat John Andrew and Chris Felva 8-1. In the other
two doubles matches, Calvin won by scores of 8-2.

In second doubles, it was Phil Reinken and Loukas Peterson of Calvin defeating
Josh Webb and Josiah Budger, while John Strikwerda and Jarrod Brower beat Brad
Miedema and Alex Tarnow in third doubles.

In the singles matches, it was first singles Brian DeMaagd again beat John
Andrew, this time by a score of 7-5,6-0. At second singles, Reinken defeated
Felva 6-3,6-1. Phillips beat Tarnow 6-1,6-2 at third singles while Peterson
defeated Miedema 6-4,6-2. In fifth singles, and endurance match broke out
between Calvin's Vashan Wright and the Eagles Josiah Budger. Despite losing the
first set, Wright was able to outlast Budger 3-6,7-6,10-6. Rounding out the win
for Calvin was Brower at sixth singles with a victory over Webb 6-3,6-1.

“I thought our guys competed real well for our first match, and Cornerstone's
twentieth match, so I'm really happy with that,” said Head Coach John Ross.
“I'm looking forward to our spring break trip next week with these guys.”

The Knights will play Grand Rapids Community College Friday afternoon at 3
p.m. before heading down to Orlando, FL over spring break and training against
a number of DIII schools.

SOFTBALL

The Calvin softball team is off to a 2-0 start and the Knights are in the
midst of preparing for a 10-game stretch of games in Tucson, Arizona, that will
begin on March 17 and carry on through March 22.

DeKleine to discuss the upcoming spring break trip as well as the remainder of

This year’s Calvin team features a youthful look as the team includes one
senior, three juniors, three sophomores and 10 freshmen. Calvin’s home opener
is scheduled for March 26 against Concordia (Mich.) with its MIAA opener slated
for April 5 at Saint Mary’s.
