Carissa Verkaik Repeats as D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year;
John Sparks Previews Baseball Spring Break Trip to Arizona and Rest of 2012 Season
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For the second straight year, Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik has been named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has also been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team for the third straight year.
This year, Verkaik averaged 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds a game. She also blocked 128 shots, establishing a new Calvin single-season record. In addition, she tallied 13 double-doubles and connected 56.8 percent of her field goal attempts, 86.0 percent of her free throw attempts and 40.5 percent of her three-point attempts. She was also named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player for the third straight year.
She was part of a Calvin team that finished 28-2 overall, reached the national quarterfinals and captured MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles.
BASEBALL
Calvin sports information student assistant Mitch Blankespoor recently sat down with Calvin baseball coach John Sparks to preview the Calvin baseball team's upcoming trip to Tucson, Arizona, in an online audio interview. In the interview, Sparks previews the rest of the season and breaks down the makeup of this year's 2012 Calvin team. A year ago, Calvin finished 20-20 overall and in third place in the MIAA with a 15-13 conference record.

Calvin will open its spring trip to Arizona Friday when it faces Norwich and Dickinson. Calvin will open its MIAA campaign on March 23 and 24 when it faces Trine University in a four-game series.
