Calvin Sending Four to NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships;
Start Times Set for NCAA III Sectional Tournament at University of Chicago
 
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
 
The Calvin men's track and field team will be sending four athletes to the
NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships scheduled to be held March 9 and
10 at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.
 
Representing Calvin will be senior Nick Kramer and juniors Matt VanderRoest,
Greg Whittle and Aaron Meckes.
 
Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) will compete in the 5,000 meters where
he is seeded fifth (14:25.88). He will be making his second consecutive trip to
the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. A year ago, he placed fourth
in the 5,000 meter run.
 
VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) will be making his first trip to
the NCAA III Indoor Championships. He is seeded ninth (14:35.12).
 
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) will be making his second straight trip
to the national meet. He will compete in the mile run where he is seeded ninth
(14:11.06). A year ago, he placed second in the event at the national meet.
 
Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) will be making his first trip to
the national meet. He will compete in the shot put where he is seeded 11th
(54-0). He is third individual from his family to compete at the NCAA III
Track and Field Championships although he is the first Meckes sibling to
compete at the indoor national meet. Older brothers Nate and Josh Meckes were
both NCAA III All-Americans in outdoor track and field with Nate claiming
multiple All-America citations in the shot put and discus while Josh was an
All-American in the long jump.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
The Calvin women’s basketball team will head to the University of Chicago for
a four-team sectional next weekend. The sectional sites were announced by the
NCAA earlier yesterday. In addition to Calvin and Chicago, the sectional will
include teams from St. Thomas (MN) and Tufts (MA).
 
Other sectional sites include Amherst, Mount Union and Mary Washington.
 
Tufts (23-6) and St. Thomas (28-1) will meet in the first game on Friday at
6:30 p.m. (EST) with Calvin (27-1) and Chicago (27-0) meeting in the other
first round game Friday at 9 p.m. (EST) Friday’s winners will play in the
sectional final Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST) at Chicago’s Ratner Center.
 
Tickets will be $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for students, senior citizens and
children under 12.
