A week after impressive second place finishes at the Chicago Invitational, the
Calvin men's swimming and diving team was able to defeat Alma College 118-106
in a dual meet while the women bested Alma 124-104 and Saint Mary's 121-84.

The men were able to get off to a strong start as they claimed a 1-2 finish in
two of the first three events. In the 200 Medley Relay, the Calvin B team of
senior Ross Battoclette, sophomore Peter Johnson, senior Greg Gorham and
sophomore Casey Harless took first place in 1:40.37. Following up in second was
the Calvin C team of junior Mark Rushlow, senior Luke Griffoen, freshman Andrew
Vanderlei and sophomore Jon Ptashnik. In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Andrew
Mitchell took first place in 1:48.87 while freshman Travis Vincent took second
in 1:49.11.

In the 1000 freestyle, Gorham finished second in 10:40.78, less than
two-tenths behind the first place finisher. Finishing third in the 1000
freestyle was senior Devin Heitz. The Knights claimed another 2-3 finish in the
50 freestyle by junior Sam Allison (22.75) and sophomore David Doud (22.78).

In the 200 IM, Rushlow would come in second for Calvin.

Johnson would take first in the 100 butterfly in 54.00, finishing almost three
and a half seconds ahead of second place.

The men continued their success with a pair of 1-3 finishes in the 100
backstroke from Battoclette (54.74) and Allison (58.26) and the 500 freestyle
from Vincent (5:02.18) and junior Stephen Kraft (5:14.94).

On the boards, sophomore Andrew Krafft took first in both the one meter
(262.40) and three meter (263.15), followed up in second by freshmen Jordan
Kaster, who scored a 253.00 on the one meter and 252.00 on the three meter.

The women were able to get off to an equally fast start as they too took a 1-2
finish in their first event, the 200 Medley Relay. The Calvin A team of junior
Stephie Fox, freshman Alexi Scott, senior Rachel Bos, and junior Rachel
Colasurdo took first in 1:55.38, and were followed up by the Calvin B team of
freshman Erika Waugh, sophomore Margaret Rechel, junior Shelby Cloyd, and
sophomore Maria Sedjo in 2:00.06. In the next event, Fox would claim another
first place finish as she completed the 1000 freestyle in 10:57.75.

In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Savannah VanWormer took second in 2:06.61.

The Knights continued to build their lead in the 50 freestyle with a 1-2
finish from Colasurdo (25.21) and freshman Alex Dhaenens (25.75).

In the 200 IM, junior Elizabeth Counsell took second in 2:18.04 while senior
Bridgett Scott took third in 2:21.07.

The 100 butterfly ended with a 1-3 finish for Calvin as Cloyd took first in
1:03.07 while Dhaenens took third in 1:03.87.

A pair of 1-2 finishes, first from freshman Betsy Otten (56.73) and freshman
Kathryn Wrobel (57.15) in the 100 freestyle, then from Alexi Scott (1:03.32)
and senior Briana Seak (1:03.88) in the 100 backstroke continued to build the
Knights lead.

Top three finishes in the pool were capped by a Colasurdo victory in the 500
freestyle in 5:27.36.
On the boards, junior Samantha Klaasen would take first in the one meter with
a score of 260.80 while freshman Rebecca Mumby took second with a score of
236.50.

“We got the opportunity to switch some events up, and we took that
opportunity. It was nice to have a low stress meet, and I think that is what we
took out of it,” said Head Coach Dan Gelderloos. “It was nice to switch things
up and give some people some off events that this time of a year is a good
thing.”

Calvin will continue its busy January when it travels to Kalamazoo on
Saturday, with its meet scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
