Bryan Powell Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men's Basketball;
Grand Rapids ABC Affiliate Looks Back on Historic Calvin-Hope Game Of 1997
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College junior guard Bryan Powell has been named MIAA Player of the Week
in men’s basketball. Powell, a junior from Wyoming (Wyoming Park HS), averaged
21 points per game in leading the Knights to a pair of MIAA victories.
He scored 18 points and added four steals in a 68-47 victory over Kalamazoo,
then scored a career-high 24 points as Calvin defeated Alma, 85-77. Powell, who
is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career, made
18 of 34 shots (53 percent) from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line
(86 percent) for the week.
MORE MEN'S BASKETBALL
On January 29, 1997, the Calvin-Hope men's basketball teams met at Van Andel
Arena in downtown Grand Rapids. The game was played in front of a sellout crowd
of 11,442 fans, setting a then NCAA III single-game attendance record. The game
was sold out seven weeks in advanced and was telecast by Grand Rapids ABC
affiliate WZZM-TV 13.
