Women's Basketball Defeats Olivet 72-33 - Moves Back Into Tie For First Place in League Standings
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 72, Olivet 33
 
The fourth-ranked Calvin women's basketball team moved back into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with a 72-33 win over Olivet Saturday in a conference contest at Calvin's Van Noord Arena.
 
Calvin is now 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the MIAA. The Knights are tied with rival Hope for first place in the league standings.
 
Calvin scored the first 16 points of the game and never looked back. The Knights led 33-8 at halftime and continued to stretch their lead in the second half.
 
Junior center Carissa Verkaik led all scorers with 19 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. With her 19 points, she moves past Sharon Boeve (1,285) and Sarah Ondersma (1,288) for fourth place on the Calvin career scoring list with 1,295 points.
 
All 14 players that dressed for Calvin received at least 10 minutes of playing time in the win while 13 of the 14 players reached the scoring column.
 
Juniors Julia Hilbrand and Ally Wolffis both had games of seven points and seven rebounds while senior guard Leah Mattson had six assists.
 
Calvin enjoyed a 44-28 rebounding advantage and connected on 17 of 22 attempts (.773) from the free throw line.
 
Olivet (1-8 overall, 0-3 MIAA) was led in defeat by Kaleigh Hill with 10 points.
 
Calvin will now break until December 30 when it travels to Wisconsin-LaCrosse for a non-conference contest that will feature a meeting of brothers. Calvin's head coach is John Ross while his brother Mark Ross is an assistant coach with the Wisconsin-LaCrosse women's basketball team.
