BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin women's golf team closed out its 2011 MIAA regular
season with an eye looking forward to the 2012 MIAA Spring Tournament. Calvin
clinched one of the four qualifying spots for next springs NCAA III qualifying
tournament by finishing fourth in the final MIAA regular season standings on
Saturday. Calvin completed the two-day MIAA Tournament with a fourth place
score of 701 strokes. The two-day total placed Calvin in fourth place in the
final league standings. The top four teams in the final MIAA regular season
standings qualify for the spring tournament. Calvin will be making its first
appearance as an NCAA-eligible qualifying team at the MIAA Tournament next
spring.
Calvin finished with a season scoring average of 350.3 strokes-per-round, an
improvement of more than 33 strokes from a year ago. The scoring average is a
new Calvin single-season (team) record. The Knights also jumped up three places
in the MIAA standings from their seventh place finish of 2010.

Calvin was led at the MIAA Tournament held at the Bedford Valley Country Club
by sophomore Carlia Canto who finished seventh with a total of 164 strokes
(81-83). Canto earned a spot on the all-tournament team and also finished
seventh in the final MIAA standings to earn a spot on the All-MIAA second team.
Her season total of 82.7 strokes-per-round is a new Calvin single-season
record. Junior Elise Doezema tied for 11th at the MIAA Tournament with a 170
(84-86) and earned a spot on the All-MIAA second team by placing 10th in the
final MIAA standings.

Calvin 3, Saint Mary's 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13)

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin Knights women’s volleyball team played host to
the St. Mary’s Belles on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two teams in the
top half of the MIAA. Calvin defeated St. Mary’s in straight sets by scores of
25-18, 25-15, 25-13, keeping their perfect season record intact.

Calvin jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first set. The Knights were able
to hold the lead despite the Belle’s hitting a .452 clip in the first set. The
second set was very hotly contested from the start. Using a couple of mini
service runs from junior Lizzie Kamp (Chicago Christian HS), the Knights built
a 15-10 lead and never looked back. The third set was much like the first.
Using a service run from junior Kelly Gordon (South Christian HS), Calvin built
a 7-1 lead and only expanded that lead en route to the three set victory.

“The score did not depict how the match went. St. Mary’s is a very scrappy
team that plays with discipline.” Head coach Amber Warners commented after the
match.

Lizzie Kamp and her senior sister Rebecca Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) led the
way for Calvin on offense. They recorded 14 and 11 kills respectively. Fellow
seniors Renee DeHaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Erin VanderPlas (Northern
Michigan Christian HS) scored seven kills apiece.

Katie Schneider and Stephanie Bodien led the way for the Belles recording 12
and 10 kills respectively.
The Knights recorded a season 45 digs. Sophomore Kristi Zietse (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) led the way for Calvin with nine digs. Senior Kelly
Peterson(Anoka HS) added eight digs of her own. Sophomore Megan Rietema added
eight digs along with dishing out 40 assists. Calvin out-blocked St. Mary’s as
a team five to two.

“We had many digs today. I think that depicts how well our back row played.
They helped set up the offense.” Warners said.

Calvin (18-0, 10-0 MIAA) will return to action Wednesday when it travels to
Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 0, Alma 0 - 2OT Tie
(by sports information student assistant Andrew Knot)

Despite a plethora of offensive chances, the Knights settled for a
disappointing 0-0 result to Alma on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots opened the game aggressively, but Calvin wore down Alma’s attack to
dominate first-half possession and create some opportunities of their own.
Junior Nick Holtrop put a shot on from distance that forced a diving save from
Alma’s keeper Graham Wallace. That save was one of many game-saving efforts
Wallace recorded on the day.

Later in the half, freshman Travis Vegter got free in the penalty area and
rifled a shot off the crossbar. Senior Brad Heethuis countered with a deep lob
off the crossbar just minutes later. With 11 seconds remaining, Heethuis
played a set piece into the box. Senior Justin Ahearne headed it on target but
Wallace once again made a crucial save.

In the second half the Knights peppered Wallace with 11 more shots. Once
again, Calvin owned the lion’s share of the possession, but the Scots stacked
their defensive line and kept the Knights off the board, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, junior Chris Nance rifled a volley through a fray
and on target but Wallace recorded his finest save of the match. In the second
period, the Knights earned several set piece opportunities on corners and deep
throw-ins, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The game
ended a 0-0 tie a“I thought our possession was very strong. We tried to put the ball in the
back of the net but they played very defensively,” said Coach Chris Hughes.

The tie moved the Knights’ MIAA record to 5-1-1 and brought the Scots to 2-4-1.
Calvin moves into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as
Olivet dropped a 2-1 decision to Adrian. Calvin is now one point ahead of
Olivet and three points ahead of Hope and Trine.

Calvin 5-1-1 (16 points)
Olivet 5-2-0 (15 points)
Hope 4-2-1 (13 points)
Trine 4-2-1 (13 points)
Alma 2-4-1 (7 points)
Albion 2-5-0 (6 points)
Kalamazoo 2-5-0 (6 points)
Adrian 2-5-0 (6 points)

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Trine 0

On yet another picture perfect day for playing soccer, Calvin's women's soccer
team looked to build off their 4-1 win over Kalamazoo as it hosted Trine
University. The Thunder came into the contest with a 1-6 record, compared to
Calvin's 5-3 MIAA mark.

Despite the Knights' obvious record advantage, Trine did not play like a 1-6
team as it played Calvin even early on. In the 12th minute of play, the Knights
were able to create their first strong opportunity of the game as junior
Francesca Smith put a shot just wide off of sophomore Brittany Hieftje's cross.
In the 33rd minute, sophomore Paige Rindels had a great opportunity for the
Knights as she was able to touch the ball past the keeper and then put the ball
on net. Unfortunately for Rindels, a Thunder defender was able to step in front
of the shot and prevent the goal.

Five minutes later, freshmen Sam Osterhaven was able to create an opportunity
for herself that would result in a shot off the post.

Despite all of Calvin's first half opportunities, the game headed into halftime
tied 0-0. But, just as they have all season, the Knights were able to come out
in the second half and capitalize on their many opportunities. Under two
minutes into the second half, sophomore Danielle Carter was able to chip the
ball over the Thunder keeper and into the back of the net to give Calvin the
1-0 lead.

In the 60th minute, Paige Rindels added a goal of her own off a Danielle Carter
pass as she took a shot from the top of the box that slipped into the top of
the net for the 2-0 lead. Three minutes later, junior Liz Cancel added a third
goal for the Knights on a shot from the left side of the box that rocketed
right past the Trine keeper. The goal was the eighth on the season for Cancel.

Calvin would hold the three-goal advantage for the rest of the game, shutting
out Trine to earn the win.

In net for the Knights was Ashton Hearn who recorded two saves. The win brings
Calvin's record to 6-3 in the MIAA and 6-7 overall.

With seven MIAA contests remaining, Calvin trails Alma, Adrian, and Hope in the
standings.

“As a team you can only take one game at a time. We're still in the hunt with
seven games left,” said head coach Mark Recker. “If you take care of your own
business, the league will shape out.”

Calvin now looks forward to next Wednesday when it travels to Alma for a 4:00
p.m. contest.
