WOMEN’S SOCCER
Hope 3, Calvin 2
(by Sports Information Student Assistant Mark DeHaan)
After dropping a tough game at Adrian on Saturday, theKnights women's soccer
team looked to rebound on an sun-splashed Tuesdayafternoon as they played host
to rival Hope. Coming into play with identical4-2 conference records, the game
promised to be a good one.
Looking to get on the board early, Calvin was able to pressure the Hope
defensevia junior Liz Cancel. Cancel was able to put a pair of early shots
toward net, with each shot slipping just wide. The Knights best opportunity of
the firsthalf came in the 15th minute of play off a corner kick. The ballwould
make its way into the box where the Hope keeper was unable to control theball.
It would land at the feet of Kelly Koets who would try to put the ballinto the
net through a slew of Dutch defenders, but the ball would be stoppedby the
keeper on the line, preserving the 0-0 tie.
With 12:21 left in the first half, Cancel would have another shot that would
gojust wide of the far post, this one on an indirect free kick that would hit
offthe post and out of bounds.
In the 38th minute, Hope would capitalize on a counter-attackopportunity. With
possession on the right sideline, a ball would be played intothe middle to a
wide open Nora Kirk. Hope's freshmen forward would put the ballinto the net for
the 1-0 Dutch lead. Hope would take the lead into half, butwould not hold it
for long. Less than five minutes out of half, Liz Cancelwould cross a ballthe middle that would be touched in by freshmen SamOsterhaven at the far post,
her fourth goal of the season. The goal would tiethe game at 1-1.
But, just as Calvin had responded, so did Hope. In the 58th minute, senior
Danielle Petzak, Hope's leading scorer, would head the ball into the netoff a
long free kick to give Hope the 2-1 lead. Calvin would get a number ofscoring
opportunities over the next fifteen minutes, the best coming fromsophomore
Danielle Carter, a kick that would be saved by Hope's keeper, juniorMegan
Altieri.
With just over fifteen minutes to play, Hope was able to get out on a
2-on-1breakaway against a Calvin defender. Drawing the defender to one side, a
passwould be made that set up Nora Kirk for her second goal of the match, and
the3-1 Hope lead.
Despite the two goal deficit, Calvin would continue playing hard, adding a
goalin the 86th minute off an indirect free kick in the box. Liz Canceltook the
kick, passed to fellow junior Francesca Smith who would pass it rightback to
Cancel who would put it into the net for her sixth goal on the season.
Unfortunately for the Knights, this would be as close as they would come asHope
ran out the clock to secure the 3-2 victory. The loss drops the Knights to4-3
in the MIAA and 4-7 overall. Lauren Merz made five saves for the Knights inthe
loss.
“We had more opportunities, but we came out on the wrong side of thescoreboard.
As a team, our movement and mobility is getting better every game,”said Head
Coach Mark Recker. “Our challenge as a young team is to convert morefrequently
in the opportunities we are given. Our team played very well today.”
Calvin now looks forward to Thursday when it will travel to Kalamazoo for a4:00
p.m. contest.
