ALBION, MI - The Calvin College men’s soccer team came into Albion College
looking to get back on the winning track after dropping a 2-0 decision at Trine
University Tuesday. On Saturday, Calvin did just that, using four second half
goals to down the Britons 4-1.
The first half was rather straight forward. Calvin controlled the majority of
possession. Early on, freshmen Travis Vegter broke through the Albion defense
and sent a shot just wide. About ten minutes before halftime, Tyler Vegter,
the elder brother of Travis, got a foot on a ball eight yards out sending it
just over the crossbar. The halftime whistle blew with the scoreboard reading
double zeros.
The Knights picked up the pressure right from the opening kickoff. Calvin
earned a four-on- two odd man break resulting in a goal from freshmen Dino
Duratovic on a feed from Zach Willis. The goal not only broke the tie, but
fueled the Knights’ intensity. Only a couple minutes later, with the clock
reading 34:03 senior Miles Colago was taken down in the Britons box. This gave
junior Chris Nance a penalty kick. Nance faked out Albion senior keeper Brian
Greathouse and buried the ball in the back of the net. Calvin was on top 2-0,
but was just getting started. Just 14 seconds later, sophomore Zach Willis
found the net off of a brilliant through ball from Travis Vegter.
The Britons then got on the board. Junior Jimmy Neiman headed in a ball off
of a Briton throw-in.
Calvin was not to be denied, adding an insurance goal from junior Joe
Broekhuizen assisted by junior Mike Sanderson.
“It took us a while to figure out where their weaknesses were.” Head coach
Chris Hughes said after the match. “We were able to break down Albion’s back
line in the second half.”
The Knights outshot the Britons 19-5 in the game. Sophomore Mirza Harambasic
earned his first collegiate win at the varsity level, collecting two saves.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Olivet to face the
first place Comets.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Adrian 3, Calvin 1
ADRIAN - Calvin suffered a tough 3-1 defeat at Adrian Saturday afternoon.
Calvin outshot the host Bulldogs 13-9 but Adrian scored two goals in the final
11 minutes of regulation to seal the win. With the win, Adrian improves to
5-1-0 in the league, one point behind 5-1-1 Alma while Calvin falls to 4-2-0 in
the league and is tied with Hope (4-2-0) for fourth place in the league
standings with Kalamazoo in third place at 5-2-0.
Adrian took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lauren Cozzi in the 25th minute of play as
she got loose in the Calvin box and slid a shot just inside the near post.
Playing with a strong wind at its back, Calvin (4-6-0 overall) gained a corner
kick in the 41st minute of play and converted on the play as junior Francesca
Smith (Bloomington, IN) took a ball off the corner and served a cross to the
far right post that sophomore Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was
able to redirect into the net to tie the game.
In the second half, Calvin nearly took the lead on a shot in the box by
Francesca Smith in the 71st minute of play that was saved by Adrian goalkeeper
Chayna Wallace. The Bulldogs then turned to their star sophomore striker Sam
Barker and Barker delivered, scoring the game-winning goal with just over 10
minutes left in regulation. On the play, Barker split two defenders and
whistled a shot from 20 yards out that tucked just inside the upper right hand
corner of the goal. Adrian (7-3-0 overall) then gained an insurance goal in the
86th minute as Cozzi intercepted a goal kick and slipped in a shot for her
second score of the game.
Wallace had nine saves for Adrian while freshman Lauren Merz (Spring
Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) had one save for Calvin.
Calvin returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts the Flying Dutch at Hope
at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
