OLIVET - The Calvin women’s volleyball team took on the Comets of Olivet
College Tuesday night at Olivet’s Cutler Athletic Center looking to keep its
perfect season alive. The Knights (12-0, 4-0 MIAA) took an early lead, and
never looked back defeating the Comets (2-10, 1-4 MIAA) handily in straight
sets by scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-9.
Calvin got out to early leads in each of the three sets, and Olivet could not
recover. The Knights truly used a team effort to down the Comets.
“I was really pleased with the focus we came out with tonight. Everyone saw
the floor, and we did not lose our flow.” Head Coach Amber Warners commented.
Senior Rebecca Kamp, the current AVCA Division III National Player of the
Week, hit .529 and led the Knights with 11 kills. Sophomore Megan Rietema
dished out 20 assists and added six kills. Senior Erin Vander Plas and
Freshmen Emily Crowe had four kills apiece. Senior Kelly Peterson led the
Knights with 12 digs.
The biggest story of the match was the Calvin block. The Knights recorded a
season high 14 blocks led by sophomore Megan Korber and junior Julia Hilbrands
with six and five block assists respectively. This same Calvin block led
Olivet to hit -.153 for the match.
“Our play all around was consistent. We stayed in control the whole match
which is something we have struggled with at times this year.” Warners
commented.
The Knights will return to action this Friday when they play host to the Scots
of Alma College.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Alma 2, Calvin 1
After defeating Trine last week Wednesday 4-2, the Calvin women’s soccer team
was looking to build off its first win on the year as the played host to Alma
on Tuesday afternoon. Alma, 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference, was going
to be a challenge for the Knights.
The Scots have scored an MIAA-leading 18 goals this year while only allowing
three on the young season. It looked like the Scots would take the early lead
as an Alma cross made its way into the middle and past Calvin freshmen keeper
Lauren Merz. An Alma forward would control the ball and would put a shot on
net, but the ball was deflected by a sliding Laura VanEngen and pushed out of
bounds. With 34:00 remaining, junior Liz Cancel made a run on a counter attack
and passed the ball to fellow junior Francesca Smith. Smith would put a shot on
net, but it would be blocked by an Alma defender.
The Scots would continue to utilize the cross during the first half, putting a
number of balls into the middle. Lauren Merz was able to push aside all the
shots however, and the game would head into halftime at 0-0. Less than five
minutes into the second half, Calvin was able to get the ball to the
strong-footed Liz Cancel. Making the most of her opportunity, Cancel would take
a shot from the top of the box on the left side and put it at the far post into
the side netting to give Calvin the 1-0 lead. The Knights would control the
ball for the next few minutes as they were able to put a few more shots on net,
but were unable to extend their lead.
With 33:15 left in the game, it looked like Alma would tie as an Annette
Stromberg shot was put toward the net, but would bounce off the post and would
be cleared. Less than ten minutes later, the Scots would in fact tie as Elaine
Cunningham would put a shot at the near post that would slip between the post
and new Calvin keeper Stephanie Goeldner. Looking to respond, Cancel would get
another shot on net. Moving into the middle of the box unguarded, the junior
would put a shot on net that was punched over by a leaping Monica Witt, senior
keeper for the Scots.
The teams would fight back-and-forth for the next fifteen minutes, with each
squad earning opportunities on net. Showing the experience that lead them to an
MIAA regular season crown last year, the Scots would put the ball into the back
of the net with 1:13 left in the game to take the 2-1 lead. The Scots would run
out the clock and take the win, bringing their record to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in
conference.
The Knights now move to 1-5 on the season, and 1-1 in conference. Calvin now
looks forward to Thursday when it will travel to Albion for a 4:00 p.m. contest
against the Britons.
