Women’s Golf Ties for Sixth at North Central CollegeClassic;
Volleyball Defeats Albion in MIAA Opener;
Volleyball Remains Top-Ranked Team in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll;
Megan Rietema Named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week
WOMEN’S GOLF

NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women’sgolf team finished tied for sixth in a
13-team field at the North CentralCollege Classic Tuesday afternoon with a team
score of 375 strokes.

Calvin sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led
allgolfers by earning medalist honors with a round of 83. Next for Calvin
werefreshman Laura Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) with a 96
andjunior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 97.
FreshmanJaclyn Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) rounded out
Calvin’sfinishers with a 99.

Calvin will compete at the Olivet Invitational Friday and Saturday at
theMedalist Golf Club with Friday’s competition slated to start at 2 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0 – Written bysports information student assistant Andrew Knot
(25-3, 25-14, 25-19)
 
In their home andconference opener, the Top-ranked Knights’ rolled by Albion
for athree-set victory.
Calvin opened thefirst set on a roll, scoring 16 straight points before the
Britons got on theboard. Sophomore Kristi Zietse served 15 of the points,
giving theKnights a commanding lead. Calvin wouldn’t stop there, as sophomore
JenPluymert added another service run. The Knights’ front row was alsostrong,
hitting a collective .609 in the first set.
Coach Amber Warnerswas impressed with her teams focus the first set.
“I thought we cameout and played with a lot of intensity, which is something we
alwayshighlight,” she said.
Then, as Warnersnoted, the Britons got scrappier and forced two tighter sets.
Calvin’shitters were limited to a .138 hitting percentage in the second set,
but theKnights still managed a 25-14 victory. For the first time in the
match,the Knights played from behind for a significant portion in the third
set, eventrailing 19-17 at one point. But with Pluymert at the service line,
theKnights rattled off eight unanswered points to take the final set 25-19.
All 17 players onthe roster saw significant playing time for the Knights,
something CoachWarners was very pleased to see. She also mentioned Calvin’s
serving as astrong point.
“We’ve reallystressed placement on our serves, and we executed that well
tonight,” she said.
Rebecca Kamp led theKnights in attacking with a .438 hitting percentage and
eight kills. Megan Rietema delivered 27 assists and Kelly Peterson contributed
five digs.
The Knights travelto South Bend, Indiana for a conference clash with Saint
Mary’s on Friday at 7p.m.

MORE VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin women’svolleyball team remains the top-ranked team in the latest
AVCA Division III Top25 poll. The Knights received all 24 first place votes in
this week’s poll withWashington University of St. Louis ranked second,
Wittenberg ranked third andEmory ranked fourth. Other notables include Carthage
ranked eighth, Heidelbergranked 11th and Hope ranked 12th.

Calvin is scheduled to face Wittenberg September 16, Heidelberg September
17,Hope September 28 and October 28 and Carthage on October 14.

MEGAN RIETEMA NAMED MIAA SPECIALTY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

For the third time in her career, Megan Rietema has been named the
MIAA’sSpecialty Player of the Week. Rietema, a sophomore from Grand Rapids
(GRChristian HS) , dished out 138 assists (9.8 per game) and added 22 kills for
ahitting percentage of .365 as the defending national champion Knights
openedtheir season with four straight wins in a tournament at Thomas More, Ky.
Shealso had 30 digs and 21 blocks during the tournament.
