BATTLE CREEK - The Calvin men's golf team completed a big weekend at the Olivet
College Lou Collins Memorial Invitational, winning the tournament with a
two-day total of 597 strokes. Calvin has competed at the tournament for several
years and it is believed that this is the first time the Knights have finished
as tournament champions. Calvin opened the tournament with a team score of 300
on Friday and came back with a sizzling score of 297 on Saturday. The two-day
total of 597 allowed the Knights to finish four strokes ahead of non-conference
rival Wheaton.
Junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the Knights with
a 74 on Saturday to finish second in the final individual standings with a
two-day total of 143 strokes. Vince Carango of Madonna was the tournament
medalist with a 36-hole total of 139 strokes.

Crestview Hills, KY - Calvin entered the second day of the Thomas More
Invitational with a perfect record of 2-0, and finished the day with its
perfect record intact at 4-0 Calvin took on Transylvania University at 10:00am
Saturday morning.
The match was over soon after it started. Calvin jumped out to big leads in
all three sets. The block of the Knights was too much for Transylvania, and it
failed to record more than 20 points in any of the three sets. Calvin won by
scores of 25-14, 25-15, 25-14.
Rebecca and Lizzie Kamp led the Knights in kills notching 12 apiece while
hitting .688 and .522 respectively. Kelly Gordon led Calvin in the digs
category scoring 10. Lizzie Kamp had eight digs while Kristi Zietse had seven.
Megan Rietema dished out 29 assists while recording five blocks.
An hour after the conclusion of the straight set win over Transylvania, Calvin
took the court against a familiar foe. The Otterbein College Cardinals were
the only undefeated team besides the Knights left in the round robin style
tournament. A year ago, Calvin defeated Otterbein in the first round of the
NCAA III Tournament en route to the national championship last year.
This match proved to be slightly testier for Calvin then the previous two.
Even so, the Knights came out guns a blazing. With the help of the block and
steady serve receive, the Knights won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and
25-21. Otterbein then showed why it was an NCAA III Tournament qualifier from
a year ago. Behind some outstanding defensive play, the Cardinals took the
third set 25-19. Calvin would halt the comeback in the fourth set. The
Knights jumped on top 9-4 forcing an Otterbein timeout. Calvin never looked
back winning the decisive fourth set 25-19.
“We knew the Otterbein match was going to be a good test for us. The front and
back rows both came out consistant, and Megan (Rietema) did an excellent job of
matching their (Otterbein’s) tempo with quick sets to our middle hitters.”
Caoch Warners said after the match.
Rebecca Kamp led tDeHaan and Megan Rietema each had six. Rietema proved influential to the
Calvin’s victory as she dished out 37 assists and recorded six blocks. Renee
DeHaan also had six blocks. Kelly Peterson led the Knights with 18 digs.
“Going into the weekend, our focus was on improving as a team, not winning
matches. We walked away a better team today than we were yesterday.” Warners
reflected.
Rebecca Kamp was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined on
the all-tournament team from Calvin by Lizzie Kamp and Megan Rietema.
The Knights open up conference play with a home match against Albion September
6th.
