Crestview Hills, KY -- The Calvin women’s volleyball team opened up the 2011
regular season ranked #1 for the first time in school history. The Knight’s
survived a big-time scare from Hiram University. In both the first two sets,
Calvin got out to a lead. The Knights held the lead at 19-17 in both games one
and two. Both times, Hiram stormed back to take the lead and eventually pulled
out the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 27-25.
Then Calvin caught fire. The third set started out with a 6-0 run for the
Calvin spurned on by back-to-back blocks by Rebecca Kamp and Megan Rietema.
Hiram could not recover, and watched as Calvin took set three 25-13. Hiram did
not have an answer for the Knights after that. Calvin went on to win set four
25-19 and the decisive fifth set 15-8 after going ahead 7-0.
Calvin was led by its front row. Lizzie Kamp, Erin Vander Plas, and Rebecca
Kamp had 15, 14, and 13 kills respectively. Rebecca Kamp also notched 12
blocks. Kelly Peterson had 26 digs. Megan Rietema dished out 45 assists.
“The match showed that we have a lot of fight. We play each point for exactly
what it is; a point. It does not matter whether we are up ten points or down
ten points.” Junior outside hitter Lizzie Kamp said after the match.
A half hour after the conclusion of the five-set thriller, Calvin took the
court against the host school: the Thomas More Saints. This match was over
fairly quickly. Calvin got out to leads early in all three sets, and downed
the Saints in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.
“It felt good to be back with the team. We played hard the entire day.”
Sophomore setter Megan Rietema said after the matches.
The Knights will square off against Transylvania at 10:00am followed by a
rematch of the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Otterbein at 12:00pm.
“We showed a lot of grit to come back from two sets down in the first match of
the season. We never panicked. I hope we can control the tempo better
tomorrow.” Head Coach Amber Warners said.
