Calvin Men’s and Women's Track & Field Team Lands 11 on USTFCCCA All-Academic
List/Earns All-Academic Team Honors;
Women's Swimming and Diving Team Receives All-Academic Honors From Coaches
Association - Three Individuals Honored as Well;Men's and Women's Tennis Teams
Repeat as ITA All-Academic Selections
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association
(USTFCCCA) has announced the men’s and women''s 2011 Division III All-Academic
Track & Field team. A total of 200 student-athletes represent the men's list of
honorees while 328 individuals were so honored ont he women's side. The Calvin
men had four individuals that received all-academic accolades while the Calvin
women's team had seven. Individuals honored from the Calvin men's team include
senior Ben Van Wyk and sophomores Greg Whittle, Dan Kerr and Matt VanderRoest.
Individuals from the Calvin women’s track and field team that received USTFCCA
All-Academic status include seniors Samantha Westveer Rachel Boerner and
Gretchen Braymer, junior Jordan Gabrielse and sophomores Alyssa Penning and
Carissa Verkaik.
In addition, the Calvin men's and women's track and field teams earned USTFCCCA
All-Academic team honors. In order to receive the award, a team needed to
maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.10 through the recently
completed 2010-11 academic year.
To qualify for the individual USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the
student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and
have met either the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or
provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
The Calvin men's and women’s track and field team was led by second-year head
coach Bret Otte this season. Under his direction, both Calvin teams captured
MIAA titles this past spring.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
For the second consecutive year, the Calvin College women’s swimming and diving
team has received the College Swim Coaches Association of America’s Team
Academic Award. In addition, two members of the Calvin women’s swimming and
diving team coached by Dan Gelderloos have received individual College Swim
Coaches All-Academic honors.
In order to receive team academic honors, a team needed to post a minimum
cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2010-11 academic
year. The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team posted a team grade point
average of 3.37.
In order to record individual honors, an athlete needed to post an NCAA III B’
cut performance and maintain a 3.50 grade point average or above during the
2010-11 academic year.
Individuals from the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team that received
individual all-academic honors were sophomore Elizabeth Counsell and freshman
Elise Kaufman.
MEN'S TENNIS
For the seventh consecutive year, the Calvin men's tennis team has received the
ITA All-Academic Award. All seven awards have come under the watch of current
Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross.
In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team
grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2010-11 academic year.
In addition, five members of the Calvin men's tennis team have received ITA
Scholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point
average of 3.50 or above during the 2010-11 academic year. The five individuals
from Calvin to be so honored are sophomore Brian DeMaagd, senior Roland
Eldridge and freshmen Stephen Healy, John Strikwerda and Loukas Peterson.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
For the fourth consecutive year, the Calvin women's tennis team has received
the ITA All-Academic Award. All four awards have come under current head coach
Jerry Bergsma.
In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team
grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2010-11 academic year.
In addition five members of the Calvin womScholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point
average of 3.50 or above during the 2010-11 academic year. The five individuals
from Calvin are seniors Michell Busscher, Melissa Ooosterhouse and Kaitlin
Spoelhof, sophomore Jordan Ipema and freshman Emily Swets.
