CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 23, 2011
Bret Otte Named Great Lakes Regional Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year;
Track and Field Teams Hold Spots in USTFCCCA Division III National Rankings
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Calvin College head track and field coach Bret Otte has been named the Division
III Great Lakes Regional Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year by the
United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. Now in his
second year at the helm of the Calvin men's and women's track and field
program, Otte is receiving Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year honors for
the first time.
This spring, Otte led the Calvin women's track and field team to its 22nd
straight MIAA title including the second under his watch. At the MIAA
Championships earlier this month, his athletes took first place in 10 events.
The Calvin women's track and field team is currently ranked 10th nationally and
number-one in the most recent Great Lakes Regional computer poll as conducted
by the USTFCCCA.
Otte is a native of Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian
High School. He later graduated from Calvin College in 1990 and completed his
master's degree from Central Michigan University in 1995. As a Calvin College
student, Otte was a four-year member of the men's track and field team,
competing as a sprinter. He was a member of MIAA championship teams in 1987,
1988 and 1989. Otte came to Calvin as head coach in time for the 2009-10
academic year after spending the previous 11 years as head track and field
coach at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylania.
Otte will be traveling to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships
this weekend at Ohio Wesleyan University. Six members of his women's track and
field team will compete at the national meet while six members of the men's
team will also compete.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams continue to hold their
respective spots in the final Division III Top 25 poll released by the United
States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The rankings are
computerized polls.
The computer rankings are new for the 2011 season. Mathematical formulae based
on current national descending-order lists in all events are used to compile a
team’s ranking. The purpose of the rankings is to create an index that
showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots at
the NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Calvin men are again ranked 15th in this week’s poll while the Calvin women
are again ranked 10th. In addition, the Calvin men are ranked second in the
Great Lakes Region by the USTFCCCA, up one spot from a week ago, while the
Calvin women are again the top-ranked team in the Great Lakes Region.
