Calvin Names Recipients of Bere'/Tiemersma Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—Calvin College has announced the 2011 recipients of its
highest honors for men’s and women’s athletics: the Beré Memorial Award and
the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award.Scott Hooker of Hudsonville, Michigan, is this
year’s Beré Memorial Award winner while Melissa Oosterhouse of Grand Rapids,
Michigan, is this year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award.
The Beré Memorial Award has been presented annually by Calvin since 1951. The
Beré honors the top senior male student-athlete, based on athletic ability,
scholastic rank, character and leadership, and is selected by the school’s
varsity coaches, its athletics administrators and its faculty athletic
representatives. It is given in memory of Joe Beré, a Calvin student who was
killed in a 1949 auto accident on his way to watch a Calvin basketball game.
This is the 37th year that Calvin has given the Tiemersma award—presented
annually to the top senior female student-athlete. The award honors Kay
Tiemersma, the first woman physical education teacher in the member schools of
the Christian Schools International organization, and a pioneer in women’s
sports. Its presentation is based on athletic ability, scholastic standing,
and character and leadership. The winner is also selected by the school’s
varsity coaches, its athletics administrators and its faculty athletic
representatives.
SCOTT HOOKER
A graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Scott Hooker has been a
four-year member of the Calvin men’s soccer team. At Calvin, Hooker has a been
a member of four MIAA championship teams in men’s soccer as well as four teams
that advanced to the NCAA III Tournament. During the fall of 2009, Hooker
played a key role on a Calvin team that advanced all the way to the NCAA III
Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, where Calvin finished second. The national
runner-up berth is the best national finish in Calvin soccer history. This
fall, Hooker helped the Knights reach the NCAA III Tournament once again and
reach the national quarterfinal round.
Hooker was a four-year starter and was a first team All-MIAA selection in 2007,
2008 and 2010 while earning a spot on the All-MIAA second team in 2009. He was
also a three-time all-region selection, earning a spot on the Great Lakes
All-Region third team in 2008, the All-Central Region second team in 2009 and
the All-Central Region third team in 2010.
A two-time MIAA Player of the Week, Hooker finished with career totals of 27
goals, 28 assists and 82 points. Of his 27 goals, seven were game-winners. He
is currently ranked fifth on the Calvin career list for assists and seventh in
career points.
A biology major with a minor in biochemistry, Hooker has been a two-time member
of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. This fall he was named to the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District second team in men’s soccer while also earning a
spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-Region
team.
Hooker, who will graduate later this month, is planning a career as a medical
doctor. He has been accepted into the Michigan State University College of
Osteopathic Medicine. He will begin his medical studies next month.
Hooker is the son of Alan and Cindy Hooker.

MELISSA OOSTERHOUSE
A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Melissa Oosterhouse has been
a four-year member of the Calvin women’s tennis team. During her four years,
Oosterhouse has served as the team’s number-one singles player in every match
she has competed in. During her career, Oosterhouse has fashioned a singles
record of 77-13 and a doubles record of 60-28. She is the Calvin career leader
in singles victories.
Oosterhouse has been a four-time first team All-MIAA selection – one of only 13
individuals in MIAA women’s tennis history to do so. as the MIAA recipient of the Sue Little Sportmanship Award. In 2011, she was
named the recipient of the MIAA’s Karen Caine Scholar-Athlete Award. In 2010
and 2011, she was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player.
In 2008 and 2009, she was a part of Calvin teams that finished as league
runner-ups. In 2010, she led a Calvin team that captured its first MIAA title
since 1982 and gained its first-ever NCAA III Tournament berth. Calvin’s record
during her four years was 58-29.
Oosterhouse has also made an impact at the national level, becoming the first
player in Calvin women’s tennis history to receive a bid to the NCAA III
Singles Tournament – doing so in 2010. She recently received a bid to the 2011
NCAA III Singles Tournament. At the 2010 NCAA III Singles Tournament, she was
named the recipient of the NCAA Elite 88 Award – given to the individual with
the highest grade point average competing at the respective national
championship event.
Oosterhouse is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. She is also
a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection and was a first
team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America choice in 2010. She has also
received the scholar-athlete award from the International Tennis Association
three times.
A biology major with a chemistry minor, Oosterhouse plans to attend medical
school next fall and has been accepted to medical program at Wayne State
University.

Oosterhouse is the daughter of Carl and Joy Oosterhouse.
