MEN'S GOLF
GREENSBORO, NC - Calvin rebounded from a difficult day one with a sterling
effort on day two at the NCAA III Championships Wednesday afternoon on the West
Course of the Grandover Resort. After shooting a team score of 317 on Tuesday,
Calvin improved by a 20-stroke margin on Wednesday, carding a team score of 297
led by senior Jess Hendriksma who fired an even-par round of 72. Hendriksma
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) finished with a two-day total of 149
strokes after shooting 77 on day one.
Senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a strong
outing on Wednesday, carding a one-over round of 73 after shooting 80 the day
before. Sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had
a good day on Wednesday, shooting (two-over) 74 while freshman Ross Ryzenga
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a 78 and sophomore Dave Sarkipato
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) an 80.
Calvin's two-day team score of 614 was good for 26th place, allowing the
Knights to move up eight spots from their day one standing. Calvin will not
advance into the final two rounds as only the top 15 teams make the cut for the
final 36 holes of competition.
Despite not advancing beyond Wednesday's round, the Knights felt good about the
way they completed play this afternoon. "We were pretty disappointed with the
way we played yesterday," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "We had
several puts inside of four feet that just wouldn't drop for all five of our
golfers yesterday. We were pretty determined to shoot better today. We actually
had set a team goal of shooting 297 and we did just that."
According to Bolt, Calvin's competition at the NCAA III Championships was a
valuable experience for his players and the Calvin men's golf program. "I think
the two things we learned is what it takes to compete at this level and also
that we can compete at this level," he said. "This is a valuable experience for
our program and hopefully it will provide motivation for our team to get back
to this tournament again."
St. John's of Minnesota currently leads the competition with a two-day total of
577 strokes. Chris Morris of Centre College is the individual leader with a
two-day total of 132 (67-65).

MORE MEN'S GOLF
Calvin College senior Jess Hendriksma has been named to the Division III Ping
Great Lakes All-Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Hendriksma has played in the number-one spot throughout the 2010-11 season for
the Calvin men's golf team, helping lead the Knights to their first-ever MIAA
title and first-ever berth in the NCAA III Tournament.
During the MIAA season, Hendriksma took second in the final individual
conference standings with an average of 74.5 strokes-per-round, ranking as the
second-best single-season MIAA average in Calvin men's golf history. At the
conclusion of the MIAA season, Hendriksma was named to the All-MIAA first team.
This spring, Hendriksma continued his strong play, earning a spot on the
all-tournament team at the Vic Cuiss Invitational last month while also earning
co-medalist honors at the Hope/Calvin Wooden Shoes Challenge. At the Knight
Invitational on April 26 hosted by Calvin, Hendriksma took second individually
with a round of 73.
At the NCAA III Tournament this week, Hendriksma was Calvin's top golfer,
finishing...over par in 36 holes of play. Hendriksma opened NCAA III Tournament
play with a first round score of 77 and came back with a even par round of 72
today.
Hendriksma is the second individual from Calvin to earn Ping All-Region honors
over the last two years as former teammachoice last spring. Like Hendriksma, Kuiper is also a graduate of Grand Rapids
Christian High School.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin College senior Melissa Oosterhouse will return to the NCAA III Singles
Tournament. On Wednesday night, Oosterhouse was extended a bid to the 2011 NCAA
III Singles Tournament, scheduled for May 27-29 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, California. A native of Grand Rapids and
a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Oosterhouse will be one of 32
singles players competing in the single-elimination tournament. The selection
of individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of
schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.
A year ago, Oosterhouse became the first individual in Calvin women’s tennis
history to receive a bid to the NCAA III Singles Tournament. Oosterhouse drew a
first-round seed against defending NCAA III singles champion Lorne McManigle of
Emory University 6-4, 6-2. Oosterhouse will carry a 2011 singles record into
the NCAA III Singles Tournament of 18-1. Last month, Oosterhouse was named the
MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the second straight year and was named to the
All-MIAA first team for a fourth straight spring.
