Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Take Day One Lead at MIAA Field Day
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
OLIVET - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams have taken day one leads at the 120th MIAA Field Day. The MIAA Field Day is being hosted by Olivet College. On the men's side, Calvin holds a 17-point lead over Adrian as the Knights have 60 points. On the women's side, Calvin has a first place total of 86 points, 15.5 points ahead of second place Hope.
The Calvin men are seeking to gain at least a share of the overall MIAA title and in order to do so, will have to take first place at the MIAA Field Day. The Knights were second at the MIAA Jamboree behind Hope last month with the MIAA Jamboree worth one-half of the final league title and the MIAA Field Day the remaining half. The Calvin men have won at least a share of the last 17 MIAA titles.
On the women's side, Calvin is looking to grab its 22nd consecutive MIAA title and its 20th consecutive outright title. The Calvin women took first place at the MIAA Jamboree last month.
MEN'S RECAP
Calvin grabbed a first day lead behind a 1-3-4-6 finish in the 10,000 meters and several strong performances in the Thursday field events. Calvin boosted its point total with a powerful peformance in the 10K led by junior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) who took first place with a time of 31:56.78, more than 14 seconds ahead of defending MIAA champion Garrett Lacy of Alma. The finish was an improvement of four spots from a year ago for Kerr who placed fifth in the event at the 2010 MIAA Field Day with a time of 32:17.69. Taking third for Calvin was senior Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) in a time of 32:21.13 while sophomore David Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) was fourth (32:33.44) and sophomore Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) sixth (33:07.77).
Calvin also grabbed a league title in the long jump as freshman Ryan Huffman (Maumee, OH/Kenston HS) claimed first place with a leap of 22-4 1/4 while sophomore Kyle Jasperse (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was fourth (21-7 1/4). In the men's shot put, sophomore Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was third (49-1 3/4) while sophomore Adam DeYoung (Unity Christian HS) was eighth (45-4 1/2).
In the pole vault, freshman Evert Geerlings (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) was second (14-1 1/4) while senior Justin Kremers (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) was third in the javelin with a toss of 167-8.
In the running event prelims on Thursday, Calvin had a strong performance in the 800 meters, advancing four runners in Friday's finals.
Field events scheduled for Friday included the discus, high jump, triple jump and hammer throw.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Calvin grabbed three individual titles on the first day of competition at the MIAA Field Day led by senior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN/Cambridge-Isanti HS) who captured the league title in the discus for the second time in three years with a throw of 143-9. Reasoner was part of a 1-2-4 Calvin finish in the event as Calvin senior Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second (130-3) and sophomore Jen Silvestro (Coral, MI/Lakeview HS) fourth (118-11).
In the women's high jump, sophomore Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) claimed her first individual league title, doing so with a jump of 5-4 1/4 while Calvin senior Rebekah VanDyk (Bellflower, CA/Valley Christian HS) was third (5-2 1/4). Oberle also grabbed a third place finish in the hammer throw (133-0). In the long jump, senior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ/Valley Christian HS) was second (17-0 1/4), junior Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN/Anoka HS) fourth (16-10) and junior Jordan Gabrielse (Allendale/Unity Christian HS) fifth (16-8 3/4). Calvin also received a point from freshman Jessica McGee (Beaver Falls, PA/Black Hawk HS) who placed eighth in the pole vault (8-4 1/4).
Calvin's biggest point production came in the 10,000 meters as senior Samantha Westveer (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) led a 1-2-4 Calvin finish with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and season-best time of 37:06.60. Sophomore Eva Kort (Colorado Springs, CO/Thomas Doherty HS) also had a career-best time of 37:47.94 that was good for second place while freshman Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was fourth in a career-best time of 38:46.97.
Field events scheduled for Friday included the shot put, triple jump and javelin throw.
