The Calvin Knights dropped the opening game of their annual double header at

hit a towering ground rule double to left. With two runners in scoring

groundout to the shortstop. A single by Andrew Bosma brought around Cok for the
second run of the inning. The hot start for the Knights contiued with starting
pitcher Cory Laster, who had a quick 1-2-3 bottom half of the first.
The Saints responded in the second with three consecutive singles by Michael
Wood, Ryan Grigonis, and Nick Papes respectively. The following inning an
Austin King single and a Ryan Grigonis double capped a two-run bottom of the
third. Aquinas didn't stop there, pouring in five runs on four hits over the
next two innings.
The only other run for Calvin came in their final at bat. Scott Tipton scored
on a single from David Norman.
Cory Laster received the loss, dropping his record to 3-2 on the season. Tyler
Cole threw three scoreless innings to improve his record to 4-2.
Sophomore Mike Fuller was 2-2 with two singles and two walks and Ben Cok went
2-3. Both Fuller and Cok scored for Calvin; the only other runner to cross the
plate was Scott Tipton.
The loss dropped Calvin's overall record to 19-16, while Aquinas improved to
23-16-1.
GAME TWO
(written by Sports Information Student Assistant Andrew Knot)
In the second half of a double-header held at Fifth Third Ballpark, the Aquinas
Saints defeated the Calvin Knights by a score of 5-1.
Aquinas got on the board without hesitation. The Saints scored the game’s
first run in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Austin King reached first on a
single to left field and was eventually scored on a Greg Baranyai sacrifice
fly. Catcher Kyle Spoelma concluded the inning when he threw out Brent
Butgereit on his attempt to steal second.
The Saints added two more runs in the second. Kyler Kolb’s single scored Steve
Crawford and Jimmy McDonagh crossed the plate after a wild pitch.
The Knights put runners on base in each of the first two innings via an Aaron
Velzen walk and a hard-hit double down the third base line from David Noorman.
Calvin was unable to score the runners however.
Aquinas would bring three more runners home. Butgereit scored on a fielder’s
choice off the bat of Brent Steele, who later scored off a throwing error from
the Knights.
Calvin finally put a run on the board in the fourth inning. Two walks and a
hit batsman loaded the bases and Drew Vos drew a walk to bat in a run. The
Knights then stranded three runners.
The 5-1 score would hold with Calvin losing by that number. Calvin starter
Brett Cavanaugh got the loss and Brian Loper earned the win for the Saints.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts a conference doubleheader
against Alma at 2 p.m.
