GAME ONE

In the opening game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Knights took a nailbiting
victory over Trine.

Calvin won the game by a score of 5-4 thanks to some early fireworks from the
bats and late-game defensive heroics.

In the game’s opening inning, senior Peter Steiner knocked a basehit up the
middle and fellow senior Andrew Bosma earned a walk to put two runners on base.
Junior Scott Tipton, Calvin’s number five batter, then singled to right field
and scored a run.

In the top half of the second, the Thunder responded with three runs of their
own. Travis Case and Matt Zurbriggen hit singles off the Knights’ starter
senior Keith Spoelstra. Mike Sentman then hit a single to right field that
brought in two runs after a fielding error. Josh Rivera tallied an RBI ground
out.

Calvin would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the second after Mike
Fuller and Ben Cok executed a double steal, with Fuller taking home after Cok
disrupted the play at second.

But the Knights did the real damage in the bottom of the third. Bosma got
things started with a lead-off walk and Tipton followed that up with a single.
After both runners advanced on a Tyler Tos sacrifice bunt, freshman Trent
Zwiers drove a run in on a fielders’ choice. Jake Van Alten then knocked in an
RBI and Drew Vos scored off a Fuller single.

Spoelstra kept the Thunder bats in check until the top of the sixth, with
Zurbriggen scored Brian Hoeper on a sacrifice fly. The game entered the
seventh with the Knights on top by a run.

Josh Rivera led off the seventh inning with a double, putting the tieing run in
scoring position. He was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Smith
then whistled a ground ball down the third base line. Third baseman Ben Cok
lunged to block the ball and rifled it home from his knees. His pinpoint throw
allowed catcher Trent Zwiers to tag the would-be tieing run at the plate,
keeping the Knights on top. Zwiers then nabbed a pop fly just shy of the
backstop to conclude the game.

Scott Tipton was 3-4 for the Knights, driving in one run. Sophomore Tyler Tos
was 2-2 at the plate.

The victory improved Spoelstra to 6-2 and droped Trine starter Kale Popp to
4-5.

GAME TWO

Then Knights fell inches short in game two of Friday’s double header with MIAA
foe Trine.

In similar fashion to game one, the twinbill’s second game came down to a close
play at the plate. This time, it was Calvin freshman Kyle Spoelma charging
home on a Jake Van Alton double to left center field. Representing the winning
run, Spoelma was the victim of an at the plate made for the game’s final out.

The final inning was part of a Knight’s comeback that started in the fifth
inning. Trailing 7-0, Calvin stormed back after sophomore Ben Cok crushed a
three-run homer to left center field, also scoring Miike Fuller and Jake Van
Alten. From there, Peter Steiner drew a walk and scored second. Scott Tipton
also walked. After a double steal, Steiner would score off a fielding error.
Kyle Spoelma then doubled to bring Tipton home.

Ultimately, Trine’s seven early runs proved too much. The Thunder tallied
three runs in the first inning off a string of base hits from Ryan Smith and
Travis Case. Trine also notched runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings.

Four underclassmen, Fuller, Cok, Spoelma, and Tyler Tos, posted two-plus hit
performances for the Knights. Spoelma went 3-3 with an RBI and Cok with 3-3
with 3 RBI’s.

The loss dropped Calvin’s starter Peter Steiner to 4-3 and improved Keegan
Worley’s record to 3-0. Due to poor field conditions, Calvin and Trine will
play another doubleheader at Calvin field tomorrow.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin softball squad suffered a tough loss at the hands of
the Trine Thunder on Friday.

Lina Avila and Sass VanRooyen recorded the Knights’ lone two hits. Avila’s
double came in the fourth inning with two outs. From there, Calvin was unable
to advance her.

In the sixth inning, Calvin put three runners on, with Becca Jarvis, Heather
Sanderson, and Avila all reaching base. Once again, however, the Knights left
their baserunners stranded and were unable to score a run.

VanRooyen reached base on a triple to right field in the bottom of the seventh.
She was then caught stealing home, making for the game’s final out.

The Knights fell by a score of 4-0 with all of the Thunder’s runs coming in the
bottom of the sixth inning. Andi Gasco drew a walk to start the inning and was
advanced to second after a hit batter. Casey Baker’s single to right field
scored a run. Trine would pick up still two more runs before HDaniels’ single
