The Calvin baseball team bumped back above the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon, defeating the Comets 7-4 and 4-2 at Calvin Field. Calvin is now 15-13 overall and 10-8 in league play. Calvin received complete-game pitching performances from senior righthanders Keith Spoelstra and Peter Steiner in the twinbill.
In game one, Spoelstra (5-2) struck out eight and walked four while improving his career won-loss record to 20-9. Calvin used a four-run sixth inning to gain the come-from-behind win. Calvin grabbed a 2-0 lead with a run-scoring triple by senior Andrew Bosma and an run-scoring double by junior Scott Tipton in the first inning. Olivet answered back with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third but the Knights regained the lead at 3-2 on a single by Bosma and an error by the Olivet defense that allowed Steiner to score from first base.
Olivet (7-20 overall, 5-13 MIAA) came back with two runs and two hits in the top of the sixth however to take a 4-3 lead. Calvin answered back with four runs as sophomore Ben Cok belted an RBI double and sophomore Mark Jakcsy delivered a two-run RBI single. The Knights also scored a run on an Olivet error. Spoelstra then shut the door on Olivet in the seventh to close out the win.
Calvin collected 13 hits in the game one win with Tipton going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Cok also had two doubles in three trips to the plate while Bosma and junior Jake Van Alten had two hits apiece.
In game two, Steiner helped out his own cause with a double to deep centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning that plated two runs and broke a 2-2 tie. Calvin scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by sophomore Drew Vos in the second and added a second run in the fourth as Vos delivered another single that helped bring home Tipton.
Olivet tied the game in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs on three hits and a Calvin error. Calvin regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth as Van Alten and freshman Aaron Velzen singled and then each moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Cok. Steiner then blasted a line drive over the centerfielder's head to bring home two and provide the Knights a 4-2 lead.
Steiner then worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his fourth victory of the year against just two defeats. The victory also marked the 15th complete game of Steiner's career. Steiner's career pitching record at Calvin is now 22-8.
Calvin and Olivet will resume the four-game weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Olivet scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
